that the differences originate between deviating processes of measurement readings. I measured the five characteristics between the fol] wing points diameter of eye = the distance in a horizontal level between the anterior and posterior margin of the eye ; length of head from the hindmost margin of the operculum to the tip of the snout ; lowest height of body = in the vicinity of the caudal fin, where the caudal peduncle is the lowest ; length of caudal peduncle = from the base of the anal fin to the last scale in the middle of the caudal peduncle. Then I compared SLASTENENKO ' s data each with those of BANARESCU and the measurements of the specimens taken by myself. There is a significant difference with regard to 6 measurement ratios /diameter of eye, length of head, preorbital distance, greatest and lowest height of body, and length of caudal peduncle/ between BANARESCU' s and SLASTENENKO' s data, in spite of the fact that BANARESCU records but 4 differentiating characters in his paper /diameter of eye, length of head, preorbital distance, eventually the 1 greatest body height/. Therefore my calculations seem to show even more differences. There are also significant differences concerning 6 measurement ratios between SIASTENENKO's data and the specimens measured by me /diameter of eye, length of head, greatest and lowest height of body, length of caudal peduncle, predorsal distance/, but these do not conform everywhere with the differences established by BANARESCU: namely the preorbital distance shows no difference in my measurements, while, on the other hand, the predorsal distance gives a strongly significant value, although the two characteristics do not separate according to BANARESCU . Up to this point therefore, my investigations yielded totally contradictory results. The Hungarian and the Temes specimens measured by me do not reveal significant différencies, but they deviate from BANARESCU's Temes data fey
