The First Occurrence of the Lapland Bunting (Cakarius lapponicus L.) in Hungary and the Carpathian Basin By Dr. L. Horváth Zoological Department of the Hungarian National Museum, Budapest The Lapland Bunting /CalcarluB lapponicus L./ was not yet observed in Hungary or the Carpathian Basin. This very interesting bird is not only a new species but also a new genus in the avifauna of Hungary. The first specimen was shot by B. HUTTLER in Urbő-puszta 3 km to the SW of the village Bugyi, in the Great Plains between the Danube and the Tisza, on 10 January I960. A flock of about fifty, consisting almost purely of our bird was staying on the border of the sodaic plains and the cultivated fields. Apart of two Shore Larks / Eremophlla alpestris flava GM./, there were no alien birds in the flock. The Lapland Buntings were represented by adult hens and juvenile birds in mainly their autumnal plumage. The hen shot was a specimen from the first year brood, in winter plumage. References 1.
