10-11. The number of the bony plates on the sides of the body may be as much as 35. The caudal peduncle is thick-set and cylindrical, with a keel in its median line, formed by a skin-like fold supported by rays. This extends from the end of the anal fin to the beginning of the caudal fin. The pectoral fins are comparatively long, broadening distally, spreading like a fan; their length is about 20 per cent of the standard length.There is a varying number of bony plates fig.l. Gastero8teus aculeatus L. on the sides of the body, the plates gradually decrease in size backwards, and are perforated medially by the openings of the lateral line. On the back, there are generally 3 bony spines in front of the dorsal fin; the first stands before the pectoral fin, the second is aligned with the ventral fin, the third directly in front of the dorsal fin. The spines are broad and flat below, serrated laterally, articu­lated to the bony plate at their base, and thus movable. The
