17 Roumanian rivers. He found the characterietical Bcale formula to be /47-50/ 51-58 /59-63/ as against the previous statements /HECKEL: 55-60, KARAMAN: 56-59, BERG: /48/ 52-55 /60/, and so on/. His findings are all the more important as he carried out his examinations in the typical habitat of the species /Transylvania/. In his findings the uncomonly wide variational values of the scale formula /47-63/ and the great divergence of the most frequent values as indicated by him /51-58/ from the numbers given by HECKEL /55-60/ are very remarkable. VLADYKOV /1931/ observed the following scale numbers on 23 petényi barbels from the Tisza: 4 spec, had 51 scales, 3 spec. 52, 3 spec. 53, 9 Bpec. 54, 2 spec. 55, 2 spec. 56. Mean 53.3. My own investigations found the following distribution of scales on 67 specimens collected from the Brook Bükkös in the Pilis Mountains: 13 spec, had 51 scales, 13 spec. 52, 22 spec. 53, 7 spec. 54, 8 spec. 55, 2 spec. 56, 2 spec. 57. And on 7 specimens from the Brook Jósva I found the following numbers: 2 spec. 51, 1 spec. 52, 1 spec. 53, 2 spec. 54, and 1 spec. 55 scales. The average number of scales of the individuals of the 2 brooks is 53. Comparing these values with those of VLADYKOV /1931/ the home populations seem to be homogeneous proved also by the concurring averages. From the above facts it may be deduced that the numbers of scales of Barbus meridionalis caninus BONAPARTE ranging in the West Balkans vary between 46-55 and those of Barbua meri dionalis petényi HECKEL between 47-63. As the numbers of scales within the subspecies vary between wide variational limits and as also considerable overlaps occur,the differentiation of the subspecies cannot be done on the basis of the scale numbers of individual specimens. KARAMAN /1924/ having compared the two subspecies-, sums up his opinion in the followings: „Ich fand auch, wie eus der Tabelle ersichtlich, keine grösseren Abweichungen vor.
