Verhovay Journal July 20, 1955. HUNGARIANS DEFY RED REGIME, ATTEND FUNERAL OF FREEDOM-LOVING ACTRESS Attendance at the funeral of Hungarian actress Sari (Zsa-Zsa) Fedak was banned in Budapest, but in death the singer won her greatest victory against Communist oppression. The story, as told by Hungarian refugees and reported by the U. S. Information Agency, is an account of a Communist regime’s failure to suppress a people’s tribute to a woman who defied the Reds and never gave up her fight for freedom. According to the Information Agency dispatch to its overseas posts, the 76-year-old actress, remembered in the United States for her performance. in the operetta, "Antonia,” died in Budapest on May 5. Her death received only a twoline announcement in the Communist newspaper, Magyar Nemzet, and Communist authorities promptly banned any public demonstration at her funeral. Quoting refugee reports, the Information Agency said: STATEMENT FOR THE MONTH OF APRIL - 1955. Life Benefit Disability Pension Combined Department Department Department Department I. Despite Communist orders, however, she received a funeral that showed her firm place in the affections of the Hungarian people. Refugees report that Budapest’s incredible ‘whispering network’ quickly spread the details of her funeral, including instructions that ‘everyone bring a single rose’. On the day of her funeral, some 8,000 people ignored the secret police and crowded Farkasréti cemetery, singing old church processional hymns. A huge throng also attended the Requiem Mass held the next morning at the Franciscan church in Pest, and later sang the pre-war Hungarian national anthem.” The Information Agency added that, according to eye-witness accounts, the Hungarian people added one more note of defiance against their Red regime. 'Each mourner tossed a rose into the singer’s grave — the rose being the symbol of an oppressed people.---------<«§ ---------JOIN CALL CIVIIDEFENSE COUPLE OBSERVES 50th WEDDING ANNIVERSARY Many married people live to see their golden wedding. Many more do not. The Joseph Majercsiks, Sr. of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, fortunately, joined the former class when they celebrated 50 years of married life on June 5, 1955. Yes, it was exactly a half century before, June 5, 1905, when Barbara Braz of Deresk and Joseph Majercsik of Murány both places in Gömör Kis Hont County, Hungary, exchanged their marital vows in the Deresk Catholic Church, little realizing then that in exactly eight years, June 5, 1913, they would step onto the shores of their new home, The United States of America. Their seven children, 13 grandchildren and many well-wishing friends came togather in the hall of St. Emerich’s Church, Johnstown, to fete the happy couple Letters and telegrams, from relatives and friends who could not attend because of long distances, were delivered to their home. Now, in the December of their lives Mr. and Mrs. Majercsik live quietly and peacefully. Mr. Majercsik is a retired employee, with 39 years of service, of the Bethlehem Steel Company. The Majercsiks are members of Branch 8, Johnstown, Pa. May they spend many more years together!
