He expresses the feeling that the SC-year wish may finally come true, that of merging two great societies, so as to continue to serve future generations of Hungarian Americans. Expressing appreciation to the Directors for their attention to manv problems at hand, he bids farewell with the message that on returning home the Directors spread the gospel, far and wide, so as to insure the fruition of the long-sought dream — the merging of (wo great organizations. Ivancso |©©B©E3|5^SiS;0l0B!0©!E SB Journal April 20, 1955. With spring and winter both showing up the same days, golfers at Branch 27 are taking- up table tennis to get used to the sight of the small-sized ball. If this weather doesn’t show signs of improving, spring golf will have to be forgotten. The Verhovay bowling tournament is just around the corner. Branch 27 and the bowlers who will participate in the tournament are working feverishly for the trip. A special bus is being chartered that will accommodate at least forty people. With the bowlers, their wives and rooters.- Toledo should be well represented by approximately 100 enthusiastic members of our Verhovay Fraternal Insurance Association. At every monthly meeting, we find news of some mechanical ability that a member is capable of doing. At oui» last meeting, we found this out about “The , Plumber” Feudi. It seems that A1 is very good and handy in the manipulating of wrenches — and — from now on, he’ll be known as “The Plumber.” I should like to add that A1 had a very, very nice 276 game in the Times Classic Traveling League. His three game total of 667 was high for the evening. Keep it up. We’ll need those high scores in Chicago! Verdis Stephens, our woman champion bowler, shot a five game total of 1053 in a recent tournament held in Detroit, Michigan. Verdis ranked high among the winners. One of her latest scores is a 634. This sparkling series was bowled at the Sport Center Ladies’ Classic. Nice bowling Verdis and congratulations. Now that Bill Curry’s sons are members of Branch 27, we can look forward to seeing a team called “Bill Curry’s,” representing: Toledo in our annual tournaments. Bill, nsay I ask you a question? Which boy is going to bowl anchor? Bill Smith, president of the fastmoving Toledo Times Traveling Classic, is very busy these days. Have any of your readers ever had the task of trying to satisfy forty bowlers — and their respective sponsors — with a bowling banquet ? If I know Bill — and I’m sure that I do — he’ll do a grand job. Dick Sendi was in Chicago several weeks ago bowling in the Peterson bowling tournament. He came in first in leading the squad. Nice going, “Richardo,” and I hope that you’ll lead the squad for the Verhovay also. Ernie Belegrin plans on big doings over the Memorial Day week end •— besides bowling — that is! Mr. and Mrs. Ernie Belegrin will be celebrating their wedding aniversavy. If any Eastern bowlers plan to drive to Chicago don’t forget to stop at Front and Consaul St., and say, “Fill it up, please.” Ernie is manager of the Pure Gas Station at this address. I know that Ernie will he more than willing to give you directions to Chicago when you have your car serviced. Next to Ernie’s gasoline emporium, you’ll find a Hungarian restaurant that serves the best Hungarian paprikás you ever ate. Where? W’hy at Johnny Stefan’s Cafe, of course! You’lí also have a wonderful opportunity to meet Robert “The Big Bear” Nnckel. He’s the cheerful bartender at Stefan’s. To all bowlers from Cleveland, Akron, Johnstown, Wind her and all points East — Make Toledo your half-way stop! We'll be ready to join you in making up a Verhovay caravan to Chicago. Doesn’t that sound exciting. It could take the dullness out of the trip. Should any of you like the idea — drop me a line — and we’ll be waiting! We were sorry to hear that Emery Szollosi’s house caught fire last month. Quick action by the Toledo fire department prevented a greater loss for the family. The roof and attic were burned along with some of Emery’s personal possessions. Everybody is proud of twins, especially the parents of twin girls, who already have two boys. Mr and Mrs. Stephen Verboskj^ of 144 Helen Drive in Rossford, Ohio are mighty proud of Joyce and Judith, thentwin daughters. Steve, along with his brother Bill, operates Verbosky’s Market on Jennings Road in Rosford. This grocery can be caljed a well-stocked superette with a friendly smile greeting you as you enter the store. Oh yes, the twins are members of Branch 27! Congratulations to Mr, and Mrs. Stephen Verbosky! During the last half of 1954, a new membership drive contest was held in honor of our National President’s 25th anniversary as a national officer. Field VII gave a John Bencze plaque to each member who recommended at least five new members. Branch 27 bad three winners, Rip Tinta, John Mokri, treasurer of Branch 27, and Joseph Zabrosky — Joe is a member of our entertainment committee. My heartiest congratulations to you fellows, and keep up the excellent work. Out of town visitors to Toledo during the month of March were Mr. and Mrs. Julius Kovács of Allen Park, Michigan, and brother James Jimmy was home for a two-week furlough from Fort Knox, Kentucky. The new station for Jimmy is Fort Houston, Texas. I wonder how he’ll take the heat ? Johnny Rihacek, our bowling, proprietor member, is leaving our neighborhood. He sold the Rumpus Room Lanes and is going to open up the most modern alleys in the country. These alleys will be located on the south side of town. Branch 27’s good showing at our National Tournament can be attributed to Johnny alone, for after the bowling season is over, he invites ail the Verhovay participants to the Rumpus Room Lanes and tells them to “Take care of the pin boys, fellows, and keep in shape.” Through this column, in the name of all of the bowlers of Branch 27, all I can say is, “Thanks, Johnny, and we wish you the best of luck in the world at your new “ LIDO LANES.” A more compact description of the new alleys will be in my next month's column. Wednesday, March 30, I had the opportunity of finding out ho:v our Verhovay Journal is put together. Dr. Géza Farkas, James Ivancso, my brother and I stopped at the Rapid Printing Company. Dr. Farkas iä the editor and publisher of the “Toledo,” our only Hungarian newspaper in Toledo. Mrs. Julius Fodor, with her son and fellow workers, were very kind in showing us how our Verhovay Journal is printed. The Hungarian sections of the Journal were being- printed at the time. We received name plates with our names on them, and I should like to thank everyone concerned for the courtesy shown us. I can easily say that I came home from Detroit with invaluable knowledge concerning the printing business. For people who like to plan ahead, here’s our first official announcement of our annual picnic. The time — June 26. — the last Sunday in June — and the place is Suto’s grove on Corduroy Road. Then turn left on Yondaia, and you’ll see Suto’s! Till next month, all you bowlers have a good time at your banquets!
