1954 / Verhovay Journal

August 18, 1954. Verhovay ■ ■ : ■ ■ ■ ■ ia Verhovay Watchtower By JOSEPH J. HORVATH — Cleveland, Ohio I am informed that previous to this time Branch 14 never suspended its meetings. Well, why now? OHIO VERHOVAY DAY WILL BE SUNDAY, AUGUST 29, AT ALEXANDER GROVE. The Frank Gyürke orchestra will play. Hungarian meals and sandwiches will be served by our own Verhovay women, and, of course, there will be refreshments of a variety. Ten cash prizes will be awarded as bonus to your admission. Joseph Barry asserts that everything will be ready for this significant Verhovay event, including buses which will leave from the Verhovay home, 8637 Buckeye Rd., with stops to be made at the usual places along Buckeye. Ye out of town people who are planning to come need only to inquire at the home for complete directions. Manager Nick Yuhasz, vice president Daniel Kali or Vilmos Urban •will be quite willing to give directions. President James Kovatch will be there to greet you. Members knowing prospects for our Association, should contact Field Supervisor Leslie J. Dus, who will hasten to sign them into Verhovay. Back to the big outing: Any payments to be made at the picnic grounds, should be turned over to Joseph Szalay, treasurer of the entertainment committee. Incidentally, this affair will be the last Sunday of August, for us the last outing of the season, so let us ALL make it a real Verhovay holiday and the grand mingling of local and guest Verhovayans. Joseph J. Horvath will be there to promote his candidature for state representative to the General Assembly of Ohio from Cuyahoga County, Ohio. The elections will be November 2, 1954. You can give a helping hand by telling your friends and neighbors that Joseph J. Horvath is in the race, and your service will not go unappreciated. THE NEXT BIG EVENT AT THE VERHOVAY HALL WILL BE THE GRAPE FESTIVAL SPONSORED BY BRANCH 14 ON SUNDAY, OCTOBER 10. It is every member’s right to have his or her children dance at this gala occasion. Practice will begin about the middle of September. Don’t let your children miss this opportunity. It is part of their heritage to learn Magyar music, songs and dances. Steve Barry will arrange to have a photographer at the festival, where the whole group of children will be photographed. The pictures will be for sale. Buy them and keep them as reminders of an important event in the lives of your children. Register at the office of Field Supervisor Leslie J. Dus, or look for an announcement in the local Hungarian daily or weekly. In addition to this, Steve is arranging a parade which will start from the Verhovay hall. A band, sound car and George Bubonic’s one-man band are on the agenda. But you must register your cars with Steve so that he’ll know how to plan accurately. PLEASE COOPERATE. Oh yes, Frank Gyurke.’s orchestra will play. We saw Louis Városi riding with a young lady the other day. She must have been at least 4 or 5 years old. Joseph Hegedűs, Sr. and Bela Bertalan are regular soft ball fans at Woodland Hills Park. Steve Barry has bought a 1954 .Plymouth. Nick Yuhasz, manager of the Verhovay home, was sick from sun stroke. .That will teach him to wear a hat. . We saw Mr. and Mrs. William Torda going up to Dr. John Kovach’s office. They’re related. Tony Pinter recently celebrated twenty-five years at his place of work. He received a dinner from the company. Tony and his wife Ann are now vacationing in Florida. Steve (Susie) Piscalko believes that fertilizer is beneficial to man, beast and the ground. He is now an authority on this. Dorothy Kastan, Bela Kastan, Florence Piscalko and Frances Beres are now members of the Sports Club. WELCOME. Judge Eddie Feighan’s brother, Michael A. Feighan, congressman from the 20th Ohio district, is up for reelection. He has made an outstanding record in Congress and is one of the best congressman. He deserves reelection on his record. Senator Thomas A. Burke is working hard, and for the short time he has been in the Senate, he has made forceful contributions to that body. He is making a name for himself in the Capital, just as when he was mayor of Cleveland. All Ohio Verhovayans should support this outstanding political leader. Governor Frank J. Lausche of Ohio is running for his fifth term. He is well-liked and surely will be reelected November 2, 1954. He has recognized the Hungarians as a group and has placed several in positions of trust. Now if we would receive the same kind of recognition from Mayor Celebrezze of Cleveland, we could be happy. Wé have heard that a number of Branch 14-ers are in the field to be delegates at the 1955 Verhovay Convention. May the most qualified and most unbiased win! Joseph M. Toth is planning to buy a new car but is still undecided as to make. Ted Szalay is a Liberace in the making. We saw Mr. and Mrs. Coloman Karnya’s youngest son whom we’ve nicknamed “Chubby.” CONGRATULATIONS TO NATIONAL PRESIDENT JOHN BENCZE ON HIS 25th ANNIVERSARY. Welcome Toledo, Ohio. Now, I don’t feel like “Orphan Annie.” There’s three of us from Ohio now. Our condolence to the Andrew Bellus family. Andrew Bellus (P.elyus) was one of the founders of Branch 278, Omaha, Nebraska. We .are glad that Youngstown, Ohio is going to revive the Youngstown Sports Club. GOOD LUCK. EXCERPTS FROM THE CONDITION OF LABOR, BY POPE LEO XIII: A man is naturally entitled to the fruit of his labor. The motive that prompts him to work is the acquiring of property. Not only has he the natural right to acquire property, but he also has the right to dispose of what he owns. Ownership is not only an individual right but belongs to man as head of the family. The family has at least equal rights with the state for its own needs. As it is prior in existence, so are its rights prior. For man . does not come from the State. The State comes from Man who freely made it. The State has no right to invade the family. In case of extreme necessity the family has the right to call on the State for aid, for each family is part of the State. If the family fails in its duties, the State may intervene. But the State in intervening should regulate, strengthen, safeguard family interest. The State can go NO further. Capital can not do without Labor, nor Labor without Capital. Labor is honorable. Men are not machines, nor to be treated as such; wages must be just. It is immoral to make profits out of another’s need, and is condemned by every law, human and divine. To defraud the workman of his just wage is a sin crying to heaven for punishment. The employer is bound by God’s law to refrain from force, fraud and usury in dealing with the workman. Ex Animo, JOSEPH J. HORVATH c/o Verhovay Home 8637 Buckeye Road Cleveland 4, Ohio nager of Branch 482, and Moses Domonkos, member of Branch 482 and former manager of Branch 511, Detroit, Michigan.
