QUAKER CITY NEWS Branch 76 Philadelphia, Pa. By Joann McLaughlin ■1 P SíiK.j K5 i j E« ■3 One of the finest and most ‘ exuberent of all crowds ever assembled was witnessed at the Grand Easter Ball on April 18, 1954, at the Dalárda, 1144 North Fourth Street. The anticipated dance, graced by John Toth and his orchestra, ended the day for men and women who had started their Easter off in their chosen place of worship, then enjoyed either walking in their finery or journeying to the nearby resorts. In the beginning of the evening, it seemed to a few of us that we were going to be slightly disappointed in the number attending, but the next time I looked around there wasn't a seat vacant. What pleased a lot of folks very much was the number of young people who attended, either with relatives or friends. It was really a nice sight, so let's have the presence of more young people increase at every dance. After a short welcome speech delivered by the president of this branch, the dancing commenced, and the high lights of the evening were, of course, the dance and the popularity contest. In the dancing contest, Mary Grofisik and Jimmie Pack won a prize for dancing the best waltz, and they really deserved it, although Miss Grofisik seemed to be stunned when she was informed she had participated in a contest. Marika Toth and John Maichin won a prize for their fox trot. And in the snappy csárdás, John and Ruth Balogh won a like prize. The judges of these dances were Louis Wagners, Louis Szarka. Ted Kereczman and Michael Mrazik. Their position was not an enviable one, as choosing the winners was next to impossible since all who participated were excellent dancers. In the popularity contest,, Mrs. Mclnar won a prize as the most popular married women and received a beautiful handbag, a pen and pencil set, a comb and file set, lipstick and compact, and a rhinestone necklace and earrings to match. Irene Rosenfield won a beautiful 17-jewel rhinestone-encircled Crosley watch for being voted the most popular girl. These gilts were contributed by S. Smith’s Sons, whose store is located at 1044-46 North Second Street The gifts were truly beautiful and a tribute ,to the above mentioned jewelers. The M. C. position for the evening was taken over by Dan Rosenfield. We all owe Dan a great big “Thank you” for the splendid job he did. It wasn’t easy to conduct contests in a crowd as large as we had, but his energy seemed limitless; also, a big “Thank you” to the Women’s Auxiliary for helping out in the refreshment department. What would we do without them? The last prize of the evening was a large and beautifully decorated cake, contributed by the Women’s Auxiliary and won by Norma Mangoni, who was completely surprised at the sudden turn of events allowing her to win something when she never dees anywhere else. Reluctantly, the people danced to a trio of tangos played by the orchestra as a finale, ending one of the best nights, we feel sure, our members have witnessed to date. So now, we turn to thoughts of the tournament in New York, and what else could I say but, “See you there!” REINSTATED FROM EXTENDED — FEBRUARY, 1954 13 Fazekas June E., Horvath Louis Jr.; 14.
