1953 / Verhovay Journal
FAGE 2 Verhovay Journal April 15, 1953 Avalanche of Tournament Applications Ties All Time Record 92 TEAMS TO BATTLE FOR FRANK J. BROGLEY and ALBERT B ARI MEMORIAL TROPHIES and BIG POT OF CASH The large number of tournament applications which recently swamped the National Tournament Executive Committee tied the all time record set in Chicago, Illinois in 1951. The 10th Annual Verhovay National Ten Pin Bowling Tournament to be held May 30-31. Toledo, Ohio, will see 68 men's teams and 24 women’s teams competing for the coveted trophies and the big pot of cash. The dates mentioned above will bring into concentration some of the finest bowlers despite the fact that the Verhovay tournament will be staged on a handicap basis. Hundreds of below average bowlers will make the race this year, battling every inch Of the alleys to gain a share of the prizes because they believe they have a fair chance of coming out on top in this type of event. Everyone, be he a top bowler or just a run of the mine one, will have the potentiality of winning. Site of Contests * The record number of teams will ■roll their games on Toledo’s very best bowling alleys — Hagerty Bowling Center, Jackson at Twelfth Street. This establishment is mantäged by W. J. Mattison, secretary, who, by the way, is a long time official of the American Bowling Congress. He has informed the committee th3t the alleys wi.l be in the finest rendition and that everything Will be done to provide the bowlers with nothing but the best. The Hagerty Bowling Center was built only (a few years ago at a cost running over a half million dc’lars. It is completely air conditioned. Its 42 .alleys are all on one floor, on the ground level, which should please fttll, tnost especially the bowlers ithemselves. We may really claim the distinction of being in the big Itime bowling picture for our Verhovay Fraternal Insurance Association. Welcome Mat for Everyone The tournament committee, headed by District Manager Julius Vallay assisted by Branch President Stephen J. Ivancso, is feverishly making plans to provide a grand welcome for the over 550 bowlers and approximately equal number of nonbowlers who will journey from many parts of the country. Represented again this year will be Branch 48 of New York City, with two 'teams, while the Pacific Coast will be personalized by Branch 525, Los Ange’es, California, with one team. Precise and Smooth Schedule Mr, R. R. Diliinger, Tournament secretary, will arrange the schedule for the bowlers which will be sent to the team captains. This schedule will help greatly the teams in their preparations for the trip to Toledo. Many New Faces The tournament is ever increasing in popularity among our members, and no better indication is seen than the tournament applications themselves. Every year new faces are added. Branch Manager Steve Petruska. of Branch 8, Johnstown, Pennsylvania, did a very worthy job in helping providebis members with a regular bowling schedule during the regular season. Now the branch will be represented at the big event with two men’s teams. Branch 482, under the management of Louis Gall, will present its Beckley Verhovay men’s team for the first time, a significant factor for they come right from the heart of the richest of coal miningregions. Their participation will recall the fraternal spirit of the 1.3 coal miners who founded our great society 67 years ago. The host city, that is, Toledo itself, will for the first time send three men’s teams. We can pass the word along that these keglers will not be ‘duck soup” (pardon the slanguage). Louis Farkas, Bill Sirotnyak, Steve Ivancso, Julius Vargo, Richard Sendi, William Tinta, whose averages range from a lew of 183 to a high of 197, illustrate formidable averages. The other Toledo bowlers are practically as good — no man has an average of less than 159. Tournament Headquarters The Commodore Perry Hotel is now preparing- business reply postal cards for the National Tournament Executive Committee for distribution to team members and others requiring hotel reservations. The business reply postal cards will be forwarded to all the team captains who will distribute them among- their team players. The branch managers will also receive a supply bf these cards for the nonbowlers. The postal cards will be mailed direct to the Toledo Convention & Visitors’ Bureau, 218 Huren Street, Toledo, Ohio. The Toledo Bureau is assisting the Commodore Perry Hotel and the National Committee in handling our tournament. Mr. Harlin L. Walter, secretary of the bureau, is doing- everything possible to make our event a successful * and joyous ohe . The Commodore Perry Hotel, (although having- 500 rooms, of course has its limitations in the number of guests it can accommodate. It has assured us that it can take care of 500 Verhovay members and their friends. Should there be an overflow of reservations a number of guests will be housed in the equally nice Sacor Hotel, just across the street from the Commodore Perry. Room reservations at the Commodore Perry Hotel will be priced (is follows: Single room $ 4.50 up Two persons, double bed 7.00 tip Two persons, twin beds 9.50 Up Suites: parlor bed loom (combined) 15.00 up Day beds will be provided in most of the twin-bedded rooms for a third person, or in several larger rooms for as many as eight persons at a special price. The rate sheets which will be mailed with the postal reservation cards will carry more detailed information about this. John D. Sabrey, resident manager of the hotel, has informed the committee that the type of accommodations for the rates requested will be provided. However, there is no guarantee that this can be done for all members making reservations. In such cases the management will try to assign (accommodations at as near the rate; requested as possible. Night of Budapest Dance — Saturday Night Victory Dinner — Sunday Evening Joe Szegedi’s eight-member Hungarian dance orchestra has been hired to furnish the music for the Saturday evening Night of Budapest Dance, which will be held in the large ball room of the Commodore Perry Hotel. His band will also furnish the music for the Sunday evening Victory Dinner. The Night of Budapest Dance will again be a very colorful affair, but there will be no beauty contest this year. The Victory Dinner will be arranged on •the regular banquet style this year. Many inquests were received to abandon the buffet style dinner, if possible. The committee agreed to this when it noted that seating ai-(rangements are available for about 650 guests in the large ball room of this beautiful hotel. The Crystal Room nearby, will be used should there be more than 650 diners. The committee wishes to niake it known to everyone concerned that no arrangements have been made regarding bar service; in other words bar service will be a matter of your own individual choice. Szalanczy-Szabo New Membership Campaign The Szalanczy-Szabo 1953 tournament membership drive is progressing very well and. from all indications, it will come close to the results attained in last year’s Bencze- Revesz New Membership campaign. This membership drive is in conjunction with the promotion of our bowling tournaments. It certainly is a fittingway for us all to express our appreciation for the Excellent work the management of the society is doing. Every member (Continued on page 9) NIGHT OF BUDAPEST DANCE ORCHESTRA Hundreds of Verhovay members, their friends and guests will be assured a very enjoyable time at the Night of Budapest Dance Saturday night, May 30, in the large ball room of the Commodore Perry Hotel, Toledo, Ohio, when they move in lilting rhythm to the beautiful music of Joseph Szegedi and his eight member orchestra, the best of its kind in the 1953 Tournament City. Here we see the musical aggregation that will play a very important role in the success of this year’s NATIONAL VERHOVAY FELLOWSHIP DAYS, May 30-31. The Szegedi orchestra ■also will be heard at the Victory Dinner, Sunday evening, same beautiful hotel, to enhance the finalities of another great national Verhovay occasion.
