The latest figures for life expectancy at birth for males is 64.7 and for females, 70.2. The difference is usually ascribed *to the greater number of deaths among males jn military action, accidents, and murders. The reason goes deeper than that. For the past fifty years, there has been a considerable difference in the death rate between the sexes and since World War I this difference has become progressively greater. In 1926, the age adjusted death rate for males was a little more than 14 per cent higher than that for females, and by 1948 the difference had increased to 41 per cent. The death rate for females in the United States decreased 13 per cent from 1940 to 1'949, while the death rate for males decreased only 7 per eent. These sex differences in the death rate are apparent and definite in every age group. One would expect with such aj differential in death rate, the number of female survivors in the older ,age groups would enlarge increasingly. But nature, is some subtle manner, seems to arrange for a fairly equal distribution of the sexes by causing more male babies to be born. The medical profession can well give special consideration jto the health of the weaker of the sexes — meaning males. /
