He joined the Workingmen's Sick Benefit Federation February 1, 1946, purchasing a $1000 policy. When the Workingmen’s Sick Benefit Federation merged in 1947 with the Verhovay Fraternal Insurance Association, Barna of course was transferred and soon became a member of Branch 39, Beaver Falls, Pa. As time went on young Barna reached the military age. The military status of Barna entitled the beneficiaries to a payment of only tiie monthly dues and the interest there of. But the March, 1952 Directors’ Meeting reviewed the Korean situation in its effects on Verhovay, and decided that it could open its heart magnanimously — yet with financial safety — to the beneficiaries of the Korean dead. Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Barna, the beneficiaries of heroic Joseph Barna, were paid $1000 instead of the $204 they would otherwise have received.
