From the president to the newest member everyone was so helpful, so cooperative, so pleasant that truly not only via regretted laving to leave Columbus at the conclusion of our festivities but also the thousand or more people who came from near and far to be the guests of the friendly Columbus branch. Without the aid we received from the members of Branch 129 we could not have attained the success which crowned our efforts You worked side by side with the national officials doing everthing necessary to make this one of thef biggest, if not the biggest, Hungarian American events in this country. In Behalf of the Verhovay Fraternal Insurance Association Board of Directors and National Officers, The National Executive Tournament Committee DR. ANDREW KOVÁCS, Chairman RICHARD J. PHILLIPS GAY B. BANES JOHN SABO, Tournament Administrator Branch 503, Chicago and Branch 132, South Bend Win Brogley and Ari Trophies (Continued from Page 1) South Bend Women's Team rolled their team event matches on the same set of alleys — Nos. 21 and 22 — a real coincidence. It was a real heartbreaker for the Milwaukee Ilall Team of Branch 475, Milwaukee, Wisconsin to learn, after the womens team events were finished, that instead of winning the championship, they had to be content with second place. When the women’s team events were over this team was apparently ahead. However, a recheck of the scores indicated that they lost the championship to the South Bend Kendall Hardware Team by five pins. ^ In the Two-Man Event F. DeFranco and .L Pfaltzgraf of Branch 129, Columbus, THE HONORABLE FRANK J. LAUSCHE, Governor of the State of Ohio and John Bencze, National President of the Verhovay Fraternal Insurance Association present a picture of happiness. The photographer caught these two illustrious men at just the right moment. Ohio, who rolled on the first squad Thursday evening, scored 1313 to take the trophies and first-place cash prize of $100.00. Ernest Taylor of Branch 164, Chicago, Illinois took the trophy in the Men’s Individual Events plus the first cash prize of >60.00 with a total of 696. The All Events trophy and the first cash prize of $25.00 was won by R. Tinich of Branch 96, Chicago, Illinois. His score was 1935. In the Two-Women Event B. Barany and F. Laiber of Branch 132, South Bend, with, a score of 1179 took the trophies and first cash prize of $50.00. The trophy am! the first cash prize of $35.00 in the Women’s Individual Events was won by J. Marta of Branch 342, Chicago, on a score of 594. The All Events trophy in the Women's Division went to Grace Smith, Branch 132, South Bend; she also won the first cash prize of $15.00. Her score Was 1657.. Two beautiful clock-radios donated to the Association by the Scioto Sales, Inc.f 232 V. 7 hud Street, Columbus 15, Ohio, distributor of Crosley products, were won by J. Mislai of Branch 514. Youngstown, Ohio, in the Men's Division, and J. Kubida of Branch 37, Chicago, Illinois, in the Women s Division. The National Executive Committee expresses its thanks and appreciation to the Scioto Sales, Inc. for these fine gifts. Awarding of the trophies was in charge of Vice-President Andrew Kovács, Chairman of the National Executive Committee and Richard J. Phillips and Gay B. Banes, Directors, the other two members of the Executive Committee. Mr. Ralph Diliinger announced the winners. There were 85 teams enrolled in the tournament, 61 men’s teams and 24 women's teams. One team in the Men's Division — the Cloverleaf Machine Team of Branch 132, South Bend, could not make it to the tournament. There were so many participants in all the events that the National Executive Committee had to open the tournament Thursday evening, May 29, at 7:00 P. M. National President John Bencze. rolled the first ball down the alley after the National Anthem was played and after the opening welcome remarks by the Tournament Administrator. The following morning at 8 o’clock Mayor James A. Rhodes of Columbus rolled the first ball down the alleys to start the action that day. The Mayor rolled a perfect strike and the ovation he received was terrific; his strike presaged the fine bowling which was to come. The Riverview Recreation Alleys were in first-class condition and the bowlers freely expressed their compliments to the Committee for the selection of such a fine howling establishment The management of the Riverview especially Manager Robert Rothfuss, certainly deserves the highest praise. “Pop” Diliinger and his crew of bowling technicians did a fine job once again. This was probably the smoothest functioning tournament we have ever had and even the management of the Riverview Recreation alleys paid special tribute to Mr. Diliinger and his capable crew of workers. Special mention must be given to the crew of scorekeepers who worked the tournament for Mr. Dillinger. Never before have we had such capable scorekeepers and the Riverview Recreation must be given all the credit for securing these scorekeepers. It is newsworthy to mention that one of our howlers, Lou Szondi of Branch 137, Racine, Wisconsin, passed up an invitation to participate in the Master’s Tournament at the A.B.C. in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to bowl the doubles and singles in our Verhovay Tournament. Mr. Szondi is one of the best bowlers in the Association, having an average of 208. We certainly are proud of him, and others like A1 Stofcho, Cleveland, Bela Balogh, Cleveland, and the many other fine bowlers. Regardless of whether or not any of the participants took home a prize or two everyone had a good time. Our bowlers like to bowl and they like to hava social functions as well. The National Executive Committee realizes that it is difficult to run off tournaments of our size in two days and still maintain the regular social functions to which our members have become attached; however, the Committee will maintain all phases of these tournaments so long as the bowlers and their guests want things this way. The Verhovay bowlers are a fine group of men and women who deserve every credit. Congratulations Verhovay winners and all bowlers. Complete prize lists will be found elsewhere in this Tournament Edition. The Best Picture Taken at the Tournament
