PAGE 12 Verhovay Journal June 20, 1951 POWER CITY NEWS SPRINGDALE, PA. AND VICINITY by Edward A. Mattie Branch 296 TWO-WOMAN AND INDIVIDUAL EVENT CHAMPIONS LOUISE tfORDA AND ANN BAKOS of Branch 366, Cleveland, 0., arei shown with a small part of the haul made by ‘the Bowlerettes at this Tournament. The pair won the championship in the Two-Woman Event with a total score of 1124 (843 actual plus 281 handicap), but Ann Bakos also won the Ihdividual championship with a total score of 611 (437 actual plus 174 handicap). Judging from the picture one would think the girls were a bit overwhelmed by all the glory, but they soon recovered and had a wonderful time at the dance that followed the presentation ceremonies. With all the freight to be carried to Cleveland, they thought it best to leave only next morning* (well, so it was noon). . . . «-------U——:—L_u—'h ——:------I----------:------' >—:----------———------------—-----—~ Operation Successful For Director Louis Vizi Director Louis Vizi, for more than 30 years President of Branch 59, Scalp Level, Pa., had to undergo a serious operation last month in the Windber Hospital. Fortunately, the operation was highly successful and, acording to his physician's statement. Director Vizj is recuperating at a rapid rate and several weeks ahead of schedule. Our best wishes for early and complete recovery go to Mr. Vizi, on behalf of the Home Office as well as his innumerable friends in the Verhovay. The Tournament Story (Continued from page 11) scribe the hospitality, the kindness and friendliness of our dear friends and fellow-members in Chicago, and the great contributions the members of the Chicago committees have made to the outstanding success of the 8th Annual Verhovay National Ten Pin Tournament. Those two days will be long remembered by all who attended tlys event which was so eminently successful because coperation, sincere goodwill prevailed among all of those who had shouldered the responsibility for the success of this event. There were many shoulders, good shoulders, ready to assume any burden just to prove that the Verhovay ans of Chicago are tops. So they are, and that’s why all the visitors departed with the most pleasant memories and with a renewed appreciation of fraternalism as practiced by the Verhovay Fraternal Insurance Association. Field Supervisor Frank Wukovits Recovers A few weeks after his discharge from the Hospital, following a serious but successful operation, Frank Wukovits Field Supervisor, who tried too early to do too much, suffered a relapse that made his return to St. Joseph’s Hospital in South Bend necessary. However, the complications had been successfully eliminated and Frank Wukovits is again at home from where we were exceedingly happy and thankful to receive a personal note written by himself advising us that he is well on the road of recovery. As important as it is that he return to his job as soon as possible, it is more important that he be able to return to it in good shape and, therefore, we hope he will give himself a chance to recover fully before getting back into harness. For knowing that he is getting better we are thankful enough not to want him to rush back into strenuous activity before he is good and ready for it and we do hope that the good Verhovayans in South Bend will continue making it possible by cooperating with his office and even by supplying him with new prospects as they have done during the previous weeks. That is real fraternalism and Frank Wukovits is the man who deserves it! May God bless you, Frank, and help you recover fully and — soon! “My poor fellow,” said the wouldbe reformer to the alcoholic, “When did you take to liquor? Was it after your divorce?” “Oh no,” was the reply “it was after I had seen a drop of water under a microscope.” Before leaving for the tournament no doubt a few of the bowlers asked themselves, “Is such a long trip worthwhile just to participate in a tournament?” But after attending one of these events, it never fails that everyone has enjoyed the trip and is looking forward to the next one. The bowlers representing Branch 296 are Jim Balku, Steve Üveges, Sr., Alex Üveges, Steve Üveges, Jr., Nick Koricich, and Ed Mattie. On hand to cheer the team were Field Supervisor and Mrs. Elmer Charles, George Charles, Andrew Matthews, and Mrs. Stephen Üveges, Sr. I am proud to report that Branch 296 came through with flying colors. The team and its howlers placed for four prizes with a total of $89, which is not bad at all. Ed Mattie scored 661 and Alex Üveges scored 595 in the Singles. Nick Koricich placed second in the All-Events with a 1903. The team took 15th place with 2842 pins. Each year, it seems, our bowlers win bigger and better prizes. And if this is any indication, we can certainly hope for one of the top prizes next year. The tournament seemed to be runoff fairly well except for one thing — the delay in the prize list. Receiving the official list at such a late date was like an anticlimax. Therefore, for future tournaments the Committee should endeavor to find a system whereby accurate scores could be known in a few days. Other tournaments can do it, so can the Ver-_ hovay? (See Official Comment, Editor.) The Comnfittee should also insist that only adults be engaged as 'score-keepers. This alone would eliminate a large percentage of errors. Advantage should also be taken of the favorable publicity that could he obtained from the tournament. The results of the tournament should be given to the newspapers in the large Verhovay centers throughout the country. If the newspapers in each of these centers would carry just a small article on the event, what a tremendous amount of publicity could be received from it. EUCHRE PARTY The Euchre season was brought to a close with a party on April 20th at the Verhovay Home. Details of the affair were arranged by John Nemeth. A generous thank you is due1 also to Mrs. Elmer Charles who so graciously prepared the food and to Miss Anna Marie Fintor who helped to serve it. MOTHERS DAY The Mothers Day program turned out to be fairly successful. After returning from the bowling tournament, the officers had very little time to prepare an elaborate program. The affair was attended by approximately 30 mothers. The branch presented each with a small bouquet. Mrs. Gabriel Bodich received a gift for being the oldest mother present, while the gift for the youngest mother went to Mrs. Joseph Wislie, Jr. A luncheon was then served to all of the honored members and their friends. PICNIC Time for another picnic is now on hand. The date is Sunday, July 15th, at Horvath’s Grove located on Crawford Run Road. The time is from 2:00P.M. to Midnight. Arthur Nagy and his seven piece orchestra has been engaged for your afternoon and evening dancing pleasure. Fine food as well as refreshments will be the order of the day. Bring your friends and have a good time. Though it is not definite, free transportation will probably be available from the Verhovay Home. A special meeting for planning details and arrangements for this picnic will be held Friday, June 22nd, at 7:00 P.M. All members, whether active or inactive thus far, are cordially invited to take part in this meeting. MEETING CHANGE At the May branch meeting, the membership decided to change the! meeting date during the Summer months of June, July, August, and September. The meeting will be held the SECOND FRIDAY of each month at 7:00 P.M. It is hoped that this change will meet with the approval of most members and that it will( mean a larger attendance at the branch meetings. ¥ * ¥ It had been decided previously that the District meeting and the election of Convention Delegates would be held at the same time as the regular branch meeting. Later it appeared inadvisable to hold the meeting as planned. Therefore, a special District} Meeting was held on Sunday, June 17th, at 4:30 P.M. The members were notified by postal card of this change. After the meeting, refreshments' were served in honor of Fathers Day. SICK MEMBERS Hospital Sick Visitor Stephen Üveges has been kept rather busy these days. Those who were hospitalized recently are President Louis A. Antal, Jr., Mrs. Paul Kotan, Stephen Zimerlink, Mrs. Margaret Kosheba, Mrs. Louis Wislie, Louis Bodnar, Mrs. Michael Furyk, Andrew Balash, Sr., Mrs. John Chegash, and Daniel Borbély. Those who have been ill but not hospitalized are Mrs. Helen Pastriek, William Blizman, Mrs. Alex Ostovich, Mrs. John Molnár, Stephen Hegedűs, Sr., and Louis Antal, Sr. A speedy recovery is wished for all of the above members. NEW MEMBERS Latest persons to become members: of Branch 296 are Joseph Mikus, Springdale; Irvin Brown, New Kensington; John Chovan, Tarentum; and Stanley Crzechowski, Russelton. This should remind us of the contest for new members which now is in progress. Members who know of anyone needing life insurance for protection or investment purposes should notify Branch Manager Elmer Charles. Or, send me a postal card with the names' and addresses of the interested persons, and we shall see that they geh the proper information. Let’s put! Branch 296 out in front in this contest! CHARTER MEMBER PASSES AWAY Members of Branch 296 extend their deepest sympathies to the family of Mrs. William Veres who suddenly passed away on Friday morning, June (Continued on page 13)
