VerhovayJournal VOL. XXXIV. APRIL 18, 1951 51 NO. 4 BOARD MEETING MAKES IMPORTANT DECISIONS — Pre-Convention District Meetings To Be Held In June. — The Board of Directors of the Verhovay Fraternal Insurance Association had a highly constructive semmi-annual meeting during the week following April 2, 1951, in the Verhovay Building. Also present were at certain sessions Alexander Nyirati, Gaspar Papp, William C. Kohut, members of the Auditing- Committee, Samuel Gomory, M.D., Chief Medical Advisor, Stephen Matasy, Legal Counsel, Charles R. Keene. Actuary. The assignment of the branches of the Association to electoral Convention Districts as prepared by the National Officers was adopter! by the Board and the Home Office was instructed to notify the branches accordingly. In accordance with the provisions of the By-Laws the Board of Directors ordered the District Meetings to be called for the month of June, 1951, for ihe purpose of electing the delegates to the National Convention to he held during the week following Monday, September 10, 1951, at the Hotel Roosevelt in Pittsburgh, Pa. In taking this action the Board also noted that the majority of the branch-meetings approved of the recommendation of the Board of Directors that the business of the Convention be completed within one week. 5TH ANNIVERSARY PRE-CONVENTION MEMBERSHIP CAMPAIGN ^ In view of the fact that this year marks the 65th anniversary of the founding of the Association, the Board of Directors authorized a pre-convei?tion membership drive to be' participated in by all managers of the Association. Membership certificates issued between January 1, 1951 and August 31, 1951 will he counted in the contest. Each branch-manager shall participate in the contest with his production in excess over his 8 months quota. For instance: a Manager who has a $i2,000 annual quota, shall participate with his production in excess of $8,000 which represents his quota for S months. If between January 1 and August 31 be produces $11,000, he participates in the contest with the $3,000 which is in excess of his 8 months’ quota. A Manager of a smaller branch, whose annual quota is only $6,000, will participate in the contest with his production in excess of $4,000 which is his quota for 8 months. If he produces $6,000 between January 1 and August 31, 1951, he will have 82,000, the excess over his 3 month’s quota, credited to him toward one of the prizes to be distributed among the winning branch-managers. By this method, the managers of the smaller branches are assured of an even chance with ( the managers of the larger branches to emerge as winners of the contest. There is one stipulation: the Managers intending to participate in the ( ontest must write in advance to Mr. John Bencze National President informing him of their intention. The last date for registering for the contest is July 15, 1951. This is very important because the amount of thie prizes to be distributed can be determined only on the basis of the number of participants in the contest. The Board of Directors and the National Officers hope that every branchmanager of the Association will participate in the pre-Convention Contest, marking the 65th anniversary of the founding of the Association. Every Manager is urged to notify the National President as soon as possible of his intention to enter the contest. And all branch-managers are encouraged to call upon their Field Supervisors and District Managers for assistance in exceeding t heir 8 months’ quota. s500 FOR THE BEST NEW NAME FOR THE ASSOCIATION The Board of Directors previously recommended that the name of the Association be changed by the September Convention. The- recommendation appears having met with the approval of the overwhelming majority of the | membership. Therefore, at this meeting, the Board of Directors authorized the payment of a $560 cash prize to the member or the branch which offers the name that will be selected by the National Convention. If two or more members or branches should offer the name selected by the Convention, the award shall be split and distributed among those having offered the identical name. The Board ruled that every member of the Association shall he eligible to participate in the contest. Entries of the names suggested shall be mailed to the National Secretary on forms which will appear in the following issues of the Journal. The awarding of the cash-prize is subject to approval by the National Convention of tha proposal to change the name of the Association. NEW PROPOSED AMENDMENTS TO THE BY-LAWS The Board resolved- to submit several new recommendations in regards to the amendments to be submitted for action by the National Convention and if adopted, for subsequent final approval to the branch-meetings. In regards to Section 58 of the By-Laws, under “General Requirements f-.r holding offices” the Board, seeking at all times to conform to the aims and requirements of good citizenship, adopted the following resolution for presentation to the National Convention: “Noi member of a party, organization or movement declared subversive by the U.S. Attorney General, the aims of which are opposed to the Constitution and aims of the United States, or who has been a member since said groups were declared subversive by the U.S. Attorney General, is eligible to become a delegate to the National Convention, to hold office or to be employed by the Association.” WELCOME TO CHICAGO, BROTHERS, SISTERS, FRIENDS IN THE VERH0VÁY! In presenting the beautiful cover page of the 8th Annual Verhovay National Bowling Tournament Album, the officers and members of the Chicago Branches and the Tournament Committee of the City of Chicago, extend their warmest welcome to all bowlers, fellow-members and friends who plan to attend the largest gathering of the great Verhovay fellowship in the history of our Association. 92 teams, the largest number on record, are to compete for the Frank Brogley and Albert B. Ari Memorial Championship trophies and the numerous prizes and awards in this all-handicap sports-event. Hundreds of additional visitors from all parts of the country are expected to attend the largest tournament ever sponsored by the Verhovay Fraternal Insurance Association and to all these visitors, brothers, sisters and friends in the Verhcivay, the members of the Chicago Tournament Committee and branches 503- S42-I61-96 and 37 say: “Welcome to our great City of Chicago! May the best men and women win in the great competition of Verhovay bowling skill! May all of you enjoy in full measure the pleasures of fellowship, fun and entertainment we are making every effort to provide for you! May you enjoy yourselves and have the best time of your lives! And when the Tournament is over, depart from us with happy memories and come back soon, come back often, to renew the bonds of friendships which, we hope, you will make in cur City.” The beautiful cover page of the Tournament Album, a work of real art, represents a masterfully executed combination of bowling themes in showing a picture of the championship trophy, and of Hungarian national motives taken from the legendary history of old-time Hungary. Here we Gee “Csaba vezér” and his victorious heroes riding forward on the legendary “hadak útja” (road of the warriors) which ancient Hungarian legends place on the Milky Way in the starlit skies. The artist is László Kaszonyi, a member of Branch 503, who donated this masterpiece to the 8th Annual Verhovay National Bowling Tournament. The photograph was made by fellow-member Louis Stefely. The second proposed amendment adopted by the Board for presentation to the National Convention pertains to the present differentiation between “English spaking” and “Hungarian speaking” branches on the basis of which the National Convention elects eight “Hungarian-speaking” and four “Hungarian-speaking” directors with one more seat reserved for the director representing the former Workingmen’s Sick Benefit Federation. In view of the fact that today the so-called “Hungarian speaking” branches generally have as many American-born as Hungarian-born members, it is the undivided opinion of the Board that the advantages of differentiating between English speaking and Hungarian speaking branches are now gom? and it would serve no useful purpose to continue maintaining ihis provision.
