May 18, 1949 Verhovay Journal PAGE 9 Birthday Gifts To Crippled Children’s FundDetroit, Here We Come! — A NEW RECORD IN ENTRIES MAKES THE SIXTH THE BIGGEST OF ALL VERHOVAY TOURNAMENTS. — Alright, Detroit, brace yourself; here we come, the Si-xth Annual Verhovay National Bowling Tournament, 431 bowlers strong, 312 men and 119 gals, all agog about the great reception and the warm “Nawthun” hospitality you have promised us, remember?! Here we come, from the East and the West, by automobiles, busses, trains, planes, bicycles and roller skates, from as far east as New Brunswick, N.J., and as far west as Milwaukee, Wis. Here we come, ready to make friends, all set to enjoy ourselves, resolved to appreciate what you can offer us and firmly determined to break all ABC records with our scores. Well, maybe, anyhow . . . Yessir, this is going to be the biggest Verhovay National Bowling Tournament. A new record in entries has been made! Remember the first Tournament in Pittsburgh, seven years ago, when all of a 16 teams participated in what was then proudly described in our Journal as “the biggest sports event in the history of the Verhovay F. I. Association.” When Bill Kohut, now a member of our Auditing Committee, wrote those words,; he hardly thought that there will be a time when we will have 78 teams engaged in a great maple busting contest. How about it, Bill? Not to speak of the second tournament which was stillborn. Plans for that event, conceived in enthusiasm, were doomed by war-time conditions that resulted in the suspension of the tournaments until 1946 when the bowlers again met in Pittsburgh for what actually was our second, but officially.still is remembered as the third tournament. 21 teams participated in that tournament, held in conjunction with the 60th anniversary celebrations of the Verhovay. The next, officially the fourth Tournament in South Bend drew 33 teams and that was considered quite a crowd. But the fifth in 1948 broke all participation records with 65 teams rolling away on the splendid lanes of the Trianon Alleys. But now, Detroit, brace yourself, because here we come, 78 teams strong, for the Sixth and really the biggest of Verhovay’s national bowling tournaments. Here is the line-up: in the Men’s Division we have 56 Five- Man Teams, 146 Two-Man Teams and 276 Individuals, and in the Women’s Division 22 Five-Woman Teams, 54 Two-Woman Teams and 107 individuals, and the total number of bowlers participating in some or all events is 431. What with 312 men to 119 women the gals ought to have a wonderful time, but we hope that the boys won’t be lonely either, for Detroit is well supplied with well-shaped loveliness. (Reception Committee, please note.) As the Ferret promised in the last month’s edition and as Doc’ Kovács again emphasizes in his article on the first page of this edition, there will be time for a good time, too, at this Tournament. No more round-the-clock bowling for us. Verhovay bowlers, for with the great contest to be rolled on 44 lanes on the 6th and 7th floor of the Recreation Building, the tournament will proceed at a brisk phce, leaving us plenty of time for other pursuits. At this writing we understand that most of the hotel reservations had been received and attended to by Director Richard Phillips, 7419 Park Ave., Allen Park, Mich. No doubt, hotels will be fully occupied for the Decoration Day weekend and, therefore, those who have failed to write to Director Phillips for reservations may have a hard time finding reservations. This, we assume, refers only to visitors, not bowlers who probably will have attended to this important matter before this edition sees print. We suggest, however, that whoever wishes to make a reservation at this late date, send a telegram to Director Phillips. (Continued on page 10) Mrs. Andrew Baricsko, Stamford, Conn., Br. 239.
