Fraternal Week Program Makes Hit In Pittsburgh — 500 Attend Celebration In North Side Carnegie Library. — About five hundred people attended the United Fraternal Week Celebration sponsored by the Fraternal Societies of Greater Pittsburgh, in the auditorium of the North Side Carnegie Library on Wednesday, May 4th, 1949.' The audience included most of the officers and many members of the 24 ■fraternals affiliated with this society. The various features of the excellent program were contributed by several of the participating societies. Verhovay sponsored the appearance of Augustus Kregecz, noted young violinist, who rendered Hubay’s ‘Kék Nefelejts’ and ‘Hullámzó Balaton’, accompanied on the piano by Miss Marjorie Simonds. Musical features included vocal selections by Ann Pekich, sponsored by the Serb National Federation, accompanied by Ella L. Brock, the Choir of St. Mary’s Orthodox Church of McKeesport, conducted by director John Payze, sponsored by the United Russian Orthodox Brotherhood of America, the Duchnovich Choir, conducted by Prof. George Pauley, director, sponsored by the Greek Catholic Union of America, and the famous Duquesne University Tamburitzans, conducted by Prof. Matt L. Gouze, director, sponsored by the Croatian Fraternal Union of America, whose performance at the conclusion of the program brought the house down. Speakers were program chairman John Eibeck, President of the Catholic Knights of St. George, who opened the program and announced the various features; the representative of the Mayor’s office who extended to the assembled fraternalists the good wishes of the City of Pittsburgh; the Hon. Henry X. O’Brien whose theme was Americanism as the motivating force in fraternalism; and Samuel H. Hadley, Supreme President of the Protected Home Circle, of Sharon, Pa., who gave a heart-to-heart talk on the importance of practicing fraternalism. Each feature was met with enthusiastic response by the audience whose often endless applause expressed wholehearted approval not only of the program but also of the great work done by the fraternal societies. Verhovay’s National Secretary, Coloman Revesz, is President, George Lesko, President of the United Russian Orthodox Brotherhood of America, Vice-President, Joseph J. Porta, Secretary of the Catholic Knights of St. George, Secretary, and Michael Vargovich, President of the First Catholic Slovak Union, Treasurer of the Fraternal Societies Of Greater Pittsburgh, who, encouraged by the enthusiastic response to Pittsburgh’s Fraternal Week Observance, instantly decided to make next year’s Fraternal Week celebration •n even more elaborate affair.
