1947 / Verhovay Journal

August i3, 1947 __________________ Verhovay Journal PAGE 3 Cleveland, Ohio Reporting I was planning on giving myself a two-month vacation from writing this column but Mr. Joseph Toth and Miss Mary Ann Bodnar are hard taskmasters — hey insisted that I write ano:her before the end of summer. At our last meeting, the House Committee was much concerned Dver the loss in revenue at the Home during the first half of he year. Manager Balogh was called upon to explain some of the deficit and specific recomnendations were made and will l>e carried out. We were informed that a concern with a national reputation will overhaul our bowling alleys for the 47-48 season. A few al;erations will also be made; the glass swinging doors in the hall will be moved forward, locked, rnd opened only for special occasions. The office upstairs came in for consideration and almost icted upon — ALMOST. The house next to the Home, which was partially burned a couple of months ago, is up for sale. Branch 14 should look into the matter,, thereby protecting the equity of the members. We hope it does not fall into undesirable hands. The broker for the property is a Verhovay member. The meeting in July followed the usual pattern — 4 hours of talk with nothing accomplished. The meeting reminded one of a filibuster in Congress but President Szalay handled the situation well. Those filibustering tried to egg Mr. Toth, the organizer, but he wasn’t at all ruffled. Under Mgr. Toth’s leadership during the last two years, Branch 14 gained at least 200 new members and a goodly number of juvenile members. The merger of Munkás Branch 50 is not included in this figure. We now have about 1,300 members, 1,500 including the juveniles, which is a formidable aggregation. Mr. Toth is a tireless worker for the cause of the Verhovay and really does things. I think he is the best man we have had as yet to run things in the true Verhovay way and spirit. We advocate having a nickelodeon installed in the bar room, with a good selection of Hungarian and English tunes. That would be more profitable than the card players and kibitzers. Personally we think it would be an enormous improvement over the foursomes and other loud Vocalists. If they could play or sing it would be tolerable but why must we all suffer? ? ? Sure, it’s a free country but we don’t have to listen to ribaldry. The Branch 14 Duck Pin League finished July 16th after a hectic eight weeks. Four teams were in the league, finishing in the following order; 1st—Toth Sports, A1 Stofcho, Captain, 2nd—Kadar Sports, Joseph Szemetko, Captain, 3rd—Gene Sports, Gene Toth, Captain and 4th— Velchek Sports, Steve Velchek, Captain. George Kontur led in average with 146, with Bela Balogh, 145, Steve Velcheck, 145, Joseph Oralik, 141 and Joseph Kadar, 135, following in that order. High 3 games was taken by A1 Stofcho with 529 and Joseph Kader and George Kontur tied for high 1 game with 223. The already established bowling teams of Branch 14 are holding a big affair on Sunday, September 7th. A Philco Radio, a Mixmaster, a Mineralite Bowling Ball, leather bowling bag and bowling shoes will be given away. Officers for this affair are Joseph A. Kader, President, Gene Toth, Vice President, Joseph J. Horvath, Secretary and Bela Balogh, Treasurer. V. P. Toth is arranging a dance in connection with the affair and we solicit your support and patronage. The Verhovay Bowling Leagues will start September 9th according to present plans. All men and women interested in bowling are asked to leave their names, addresses and phone numbers with either Mgr. Toth or Miss Bodnar at the Verhovay Home, 8637 Buckeye Road or call the office at RA. 8834. Branch 14 will hold their annual picnic Sunday August 10th at Slapnicka Grove. The best route from the Home would be along Buckeye to Moreland Blvd. to route 8 where it intersects at Kinsman, Warrensville Center Road, Moreland and Route 8 to Aurora Road, or South Miles as it used to be known, southeast on Aurora to Cochran, south on Cochran to the picnic grounds. After you pass Solon Road, look' for a sign on your left — the traditional Hungarian dishes and refreshments will be served — dancing and a short program are also planned. The Picnic Committee, headed by Zsigmond Kader, invites all Verhovayans and their friends to participate in this annual event. Before we close — 1 would like to say that men have less courage than women. Imagine a man with ten cents in his pocket trying on ten suits of clothes! Amen! Exanimo • Joseph J. Music will be furnished by the Szikora and Medve orchestra. A bowling match-game between the teams of Lorain and Attention — Branch Managers! Members of several branches of the former Workingmen’s Sick Benefit Federation have paid their dues to the Managers of the local yerhovay branches and such clues have been accepted and forwarded by the Verhovay Managers, even though these branches of the former W.S.B.F., had not yet been merged with the local branches of the Verhovay. Both the members and managers probably were under the impression that these branches had been merged which, howver, is not the case unless the Manager has been duly notified of the merger by the Home Office. A branch of the former Workingmen’s Sick Benefit Federation desiring to merge with the nearest braneh of the Verhovay, must inform the Home Office of its intention. The Home Office, then, will duly inform the managers of both the receiving and merging branches of the appoval of the merger. The membership list of the merged branch will he entered, thereupon, on the Monthly Report of the receiving branch and the Manager of this branch will be authorized to accept the dues from the members of the merged branch of the former Workingmen’s Sick Benefit Federation. Under no circumstances must the Manager of the Verhovay Braneh handle the dues of the members of a Federation branch before the efecting of the merger by the Home Office. Any déviation from this rule will result only in confusion and delay the accurate processing of the Monthly Reports at the Home Office. Agreement as to a merger between two branches is not sufficient: such agreement first must be approved and carried out by the Home Office before it can be effected at the branch. Until approval of a merger by the Home Office the members of the former Workingmen's Sick Benefit Federation shall pay their dues to their own branchsecretary who must continue accepting and forwarding them.
