MICH. Cass City, a community of' approximately 1,400 inhabitants, 30 miles to the west of Lake Huron, is the northern-most outpost of the Verhovay in the state of Michigan. Only 28 members hold the fort in this territory which, far from sister-branches and other Hungarian colonies, offers little opportunity for expansion. Though the branch is small, its roots reach deep down in the soil, for this is farming country which has a powerful hold on its fine people. Louis Franks has been the manager of Branch 496 since January, 1945. He was born in Dayton, O., on November 26, 1911, joined the Verhovay at Branch 412, in Flint, Mich., in 1938, moved to Cass City twenty-one years ago and has been running his own farm ever since. He married the former Irene Orbán in April, 1938, and they have three children, Catherine, 8, John, 6, and Peter, 5 years old. All of the family are members of the Verhovay. To the Association all of its little and big families are equally precious, and we are glad to pay tribute to fellow-member Louis Franks, head of our little family in Cass City, for his brotherly and conscientious service to the membership of his branch.
