Verhcfvayans will always remember that their organization was founded by miners who carried this association through the difficulties of the first decades to unparalleled expansion. — Miners are socially minded people and as such, fraternalists by tradition. Martin Leber, Senior Order manager of Branch 59. is no exception. He was born in Királydarocz, Szatmar County, Hungary, on November 19, 1887 and came to the United States in January 1906. He settled in Windber, Pa., where he resides at 1237 Mine 40. Immediately upon his arrival in Windber, he started to work in the mines and with the exception of an 11 year period, from 1922 to 1933, spent all his working years as a coal-miner. He joned Branch 59, Scalp Level, Pa., in 1908, was elected a member of the branch-auditing Committee in the same year, then comptroller in 1915, serving in this capacity until 1922*. From 1923 to 1925 he was vice-president of Branch 286, Portage, Pa., and following his return to Windber, was elected manager of Branch 59, in 1939 which position he has held ever since. True to the traditions of the Verhovay miners, he always strove to increase the membership of his branch, won a $50.00 award in the contest held in 1940, and has 149 new members to his credit. As former secretary, deacon and treasurer of the Hungarian Roman Catholic Church of Windber, Pa., he contributed a great deal towards the building of the new church of this parish. He is also secretary of the local chapter of the American Hungarian Relief, Inc. He married the former Emma Ludesher in January, 1922, and they have five daughters, Ella, 22, Helen, 18, Julia, 16, Mary, 14, and Elizabeth, 12, all single. 16. ) DUQUESNE, PA. Branches 214, 412 $25,300 (37 members) STAGNANT BRANCHES The managers of 9 branches from among the 83 listed in the following, have offered valid excuses for not participating in the contest. No word was received from the other 74. The list of these stagnant branches, however, is not published in a reproachful spirit. We prefer to believe that during the rest of the year of the Sixtieth Anniversary these branches, too, will make a contribution to the promotional effort of our organization. Though the anniversary contest is closed, our efforts in behalf of the further advancement of the Association are not to cease. Winners, boosters and non-participants alike are urged to continue working for the expansion of the Verhovay. Only then will 1946, the year of Verhovay’s Sixtieth Anniversary become the MOST SUCCESSFUL YEAR IN THE HISTORY OF OUR ASSOCIATION. And that is our aim.
