And what affords us more relaxation than travel? Travel to romance, to thrilling new experiences, to adventure, to peace! See America! See the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone National Park, New Mexico, Alaska! Cruise to South America, Mexico, Guatemala! Or just take a run out to your friend’s country home for the week end. But whereever you gou, be sure to take along a good supply of beauty essentials so that you can face new people, new scenes and new experiences with complete selfconfidence in your own good looks. Being beautiful while traveling is simply a matter of a little advance planning, according to Helena Rubinstein. She knows from her own experiences, having ciossed the Atlantic Ocean 189 times and visited every important country there is! So for your week end at a country home you should have a bottle of Liquid Sunshine for suntanning, a jar of Pasteurized Face Cream, Town and Country Make-Up Film and a jar of Minute Make-Up for cleansings after a stiff game of tennis or round of golf. For a motor trip to Canada . a bottle of Sun-Tan Cream to wear while motoring as a protection from dust, wind and sun. Herbal Eyelid Oil to prevent that squint look around the eyes. Travel light on a motor trip, and carry all your necessities in a Stowaway Beauty Case. For a boat trip to South Amer ica... a bottle of Liquid Sun shine for deck chair sun baths. Pasteurized Face Cream, Herbal Beauty Masque and a complete set of Aquacade Waterproof Make-Up, to combat the salt spray in your face. For two weeks in the country ... in addition to your bottle of Liquid Sunshine and jar of Pasteurized Cream, include a jar of Make-Up Cream and Rico Tan Make-Up. For two weeks at the sea shore ... Liquid Sunshine, Town and Country Night Cream, a bottle of Hand Lotion, Herbal Eyelid Oil and your set of Aqua cade Waterproof Make-Up. But now a little thought to suitable gifts for the week end (or longer) hostess. Lentheric suggests for Bandbox daintiness a bevy of their Bouquets softly nestled in a miniature Bandbox with a wide satin bow in harmonizing shades. Acknowledge your invitations with this Bouquet Bandbox tucked away in your bag as a fragrant gesture to your hostess, who will keep sermely dainty until the arrival of her next generous guest. For her, you have the choice of Tweed, Miracle, Shanghai, A Bientot or Confetti. And for her teen-age daughter, Pink Party will reward you with squeals of delight. Then for bathtub daintiness Lentheric gives you a new bubbling bath salts. These are a three way treat to any hostess, for the bath water gets softened while going into its bubbling ct. She.emerges ... a serene sybarite! Bubble Bath Salts will be available shortly at leading toiletries counters. Yardley’s suggest their brand new Pre-View Beauty Box for ny hostess! This clever arrangement contains three essentials for a brighter skin, a Cleansing Cream, Toning Lotion and English Complexion Powder, a grand introduction to the Yardley Simplified Beauty Treatment. Or if you prefer a gift a bit more expensive, what about their Bond Street Double Vanity? This new vanity is oblong and slim with a (save-your-fingernail) clip fastener. The top of the gold finish case has a scroll design variously combining red, white and blue, and is available with loose or cake powder combined with flattering tones of dry rouge. La Cross suggests one of their new Implement Sets, either for your hostess or to the men in service. The genuine pigskin case holds a file, an all-purpose nail scissors, tweezers, pusher and toenail nipper. It’s an extremely attractive little set, as useful as it is handsome, and small enough to tuck away in a pocket! Jergens suggest their brand new Morning Glory Cologne, or a giant bath size bottle of their famous Hand Lotion ... soothing, refreshing and mildly fragrant, used after the bath it is a generous contribution toward the essentials which make for personal “soin.” The new bath size bottle is unusual in shape. When empty, with label removed, it can serve as an opaline lamp base. Woodbury’s suggest their new Matched Make-Up as a week and gift! This new powder, rouge and lipstick are. right together, and . can be obtained for any one of the five basic skin tones. So take a careful look at your hostess and decide whether she is the Cameo Skin Type like Virginia Bruce... the Honey Skin Type like Bréma Joyce ... The American Beauty Blend like Myrna Loy... The Ivory Skin Type like Merle Oberon... or the Tropic Skin Type like Dolores Del Rio. With such a guide to go by, who could help but please their hostess? Here, then, is to your summer ... and oodles of invitations! Well, friends, your Aunt Mary firmly believes the age of miracles has not passed! Guess what? I recently discovered that I have a follower ... a reader... a fan! But don’t let me confuse you, those titles all belong to one person, not three! Nevertheless, it made this old heart of mine do a jig in ragtime when I received a card from our own Albert Jozik informing me that he had made my Frozen Pineapple Cream... with his own hands ... and intends to try my sandwich filler next! Such popularity is really undeserved ... or is it? Anyway, HE thinks my recipes are good! So today, ‘since he .showed a preference for frozen foods, I’ll begin with another “noaxeronner” ... the Three Fives Sherbert. Juice of 3 lemons Juice of 3 oranges 3 bananas, crushed 3 cups sugar 3 cups water Boil sugar and water until thin syrup is formed. Cool. Combine with juices and crushed bananas. Pour into electric refrigerator trays and freeze quickly ... placing control at highest freezing point. A clever and tasty salad can be made by placing a pineapple slice on a lettuce leaf... filling the center hole with cream cheese, and top with mayonnaise and maraschino cherry. Here comes a favorite recipe of mine, Chi okén Croquettes. 2 tablespwons butter 2 tablespoons flour 1 cup milk 2 teaspoons salt 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce !4 teaspoon paprika M teaspoon pepper 1 tablespoon chopped parsley 2 cups chopped chicken 2 eggs Melt butter in saucepan; add flour and cold milk slowly, stirring until smooth; add seasoning GADABOUTS Your editor never realized exactly how much fun she had before she began keeping a detailed journal for use in this column! Now I take notes on anything of interest, hoping it may provide a bit of amusement to my readers... the three of them! Gadabouts, as the name implies, is just a light and frivolous account of comings and goings ... hither, thither and yon... and this time the direction taken is yon! Your editor was the guest of Doctor and Mrs. Tibor de Cholnoky, at their country home in Greenwich, Connecticut. I think... Greenwich is one of the most picturesque spots in the East... I believe the pine trees along the water’s edge helped that opinion along! Tall, whispering pines ... never silent! Some day I’m going to write a poem about them! I met oodles of new and interesting people__among them a Norwegian furrier and a Swedish importer ... most charming! I participated in a “right and parsley. Boil three minutes. Add chicken, mix well and pour out on platter to cool. When cool enough to handle take large spoon of mixture in floured hands; shape into balls, or cones, and put into cool place until firm. Roll in bread crumbs, then in eggs beaten with two tablespoons cold milk, then in bread crumbs. Fry in deep shortening, drain. French Toast... for a quick lunch. % cup flour 1 teaspoon Baking Powder 14 teaspoon salt % cup milk 1 egg sliced bread Sift together flour, baking powder and salt; add milk and beaten egg; beat well. Into this dip bread slices, and fry in hot shortening. Drain and serve hot with powdered sugar sprinkled over each slice. For the best recipe for Hollandaise Sauce ... lend an ear. % cup butter 2 beaten egg yolks 1 tablespoon lemon juice salt cayenne % cup boiling water Cream butter; add gradually, stirring well, egg yolks, lemon juice, salt and cayenne; add boiling water slowly. Stir over double boiler till thick as boiled custard. Serve immediately. Well, that’s all for this time, folks, and here’s hopin’ your Aunt Mary will manage to annex another reader sometime soon. So long again! —AUNT MARY smart” outdoor barbecue ... loads of fun! Returning from Greenwich, I stopped over in New York for a few days to see what was doing ... if anything ... and as usual there was . .. First... a fencing exhibition at University Place with Salle Santelli... A trip through Central Park ... hadn’t done that in ages! Even fed the pigeons ... Find that the antics of the sea lions still amuse me... and the tigrons send shivers up and down my back! Rode down Fifth Avenue in one of those double-deck busses ... never did that before, and it turned out to be lots of fun! The view is just a bit on the “uppish” side... and you certainly do have to hang on to your hat! Saw more ‘broom-stick’ skirts and embroidered peasant blouses than I could even begin to count! Evening gowns are following the same trend ... you match the skirts and blouses... and mix them... then trim them with anything! Hawaiian leis of artificial flowers are being worn ... though I’d imagine they would be a bit on the hot side in this weather. I received two leis made of fresh flowers by Clipper from Honolulu recently ... one a carnation lei... the other made of three strands of crown flowers ... they were packed by T. Kunikiyo, one of the leading florists on the Islands ... so delicately beautiful I was afraid to touch them! Not much to write about clothes this trip except that everybody is shedding as much of them as they possibly can! Swim suits are cleverly styled of ‘stretchy’ satin ... and again the Hawaiian influence ... simulated grass skirts and bras, with bare midriff! Those for the daring soul... or perhaps for the gal who does all her ‘swimming’ on the warm sands, not in the water! But as all good things come to an end, so did this trip... now all there remains of it are a few scattered sentences in a column called ... Gadabouts! Cheerio!-----------------O-----------------WHO IS THE HAPPIEST MAN? If you were to ask Lin Yutang that question he would tell you, as he does in his book, “The Importance of Living,” that the happiest man is still the man of the middle class, who has earned a slight means of economic independence, who has done a little, but just a little, for mankind, and who is slightly distinguished in his com' munity but not too distinguished. It is only in this milieu of wellknown obscurity and financial competence with a pinch, when life is fairly care-free that the human spirit is happiest and suceeds best. “The Vagabond”
