February 13, 194\ Verhovayak Lapja ragt 9 LADIES’ PAGE Conducted by BETTY CAHOL Appeal, Beauty and Charm By BETTY CAROL BALEGA With the thought that Saint Valentine’s Day is in the not too distant future, there comes the first nostalgic longing fo spring. At least that is the general conception in various sections ol this country. The woman of today has become a trifle weary of winter sports, storms and bracing winds, plus their effect on her appearance. So with an impatient toss of her head, she shakes the snow flakes from hei curls and begins the process of “defrosting her beauty.” There is a delicate, lace-likc loveliness about an old fashioned valentine that has recaptured ladies of the present. That “new look”! Essentially feminine! Perhaps you may find among my following suggestions a few ideas that will help you attain or regain just such a fresh and appealing appearance. From Helena Rubinstein come the following hints: At the first sign of dryness in your skin, substitute a cream soap for your regular soap and water washing. Use a three purpose winter lotion for your hands and face, and as a body rub. Wear a Sportstick as a foundation for your lipstick. This new type of colorless lip beautifier protects the delicate tissues of the lips and holds lipstick all day. Smooth a fine film of herbal eyelid oil on your lids to prevent these sensitive tissues from drying out. This is a good way to give your eyes that dewy look, too. Most important, never to go out of doors without wearing a protective town and country make-up film beneath your makeup. From the Charles of the Ritz Salon come the magnificent Emollient Creams to counteract the effects of winter’s icy blasts of wind. An emollient is a softening cream, and its purpose is to keep the skin supple and smooth. It is important, however, to use an emollient designed particularly to benefit your type of skin. You will find among the creams listed one which should suit your type to perfection. For the thin, dry and sensitive skin: Velvet Texture Cream. For the older woman, or a skin in which lines have begun to make their appearance: Super- Rich Cream. For the oily skin: Requisite Cream. For the normal skin: Skin Cream. After having cleansed the face and neck, apply the Skin Freshener, which in the case of an oily skin should be followed with the Mild Astringent, then smooth on the correct emollient. This may be left on overnight, or from fifteen to thirty minutes. To Schiaparelli now go orchids for her new lip stick, “Stage,” a warm rosy-toned color for full fledged beauties! “Stage” takes its place with the new reds featured by Schiaparelli in the tour wardrobe she is wearing on her present lecture trip. The new shade is particularly effective with navy and black, and promises to be as great a success as her famous “Shocking.” Good news is the fact that “Sleeping de Schiaparelli,” that exciting scent first shipped from Paris in four ounce bottles, is now obtainable in less extravagant quality at much less cost. Connoisseurs now buy two ounce bottles and have the pleasure of possessing or giving one of the rare perfumes made in France before the fall of Paris. Shulton’s offering to “that new look” and loveliness and old lace subject is their Early American Old Spice Post Box. The newest addition to the familiar family of Old Spice toiletries contains toilet water, soap and talcum, and the cotton sachet for scenting your note paper. With America’s young men answering the patriotic call to serve their country, the art of letter writing has suddenly come into today’s life! Hence, the Post Box! The quaintness of days gone by has been combined with the timeliness of now in the hinged box, gaily decorated with early American motifs. Aunt Mary's Column Well, folks, here we are in the festive month of February already! What with Saint Valentine’s Day, Lincoln’s birthday and Washington’s birthday, I’m sure the parties will be numerous and gay. Today I’ve gone through all the party desserts and niceties that I could find, and here is the result— Red is the predominating color of the month, you have the hearts, cherries, and strawberries to work with. So to start off with we have Strawberry Ice Cream— 2 cups thick cream and 2 cups milk (or 4 cups thin cream) 1 cup sugar 1 box strawberries. Mix the cream, milk, sugar and strawberries. Put mixture into a freezer or refrigerator trays and freeze. * * * * Valentine Heart Cakes % cup shortening 1 !4 cups sugar 4 eggs % cup milk 2 cups cake flour, sifted 2% teaspoons baking powder Vi teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon vanilla. Cream shortening and sugar, add beaten eggs, and mix. Sift dry ingredients and add to first mixture alternately with milk. Add vanilla Bake in heart shaped muffin tins in a moderate oven for 25 minutes. Cover with pink frosting. * * * “Come ye, Mistress! Be ye merry Though ’tis blustery February Help us celebrate With fun The birthday of George Washington!” And what could be better to treat the young ones to than— Cocoanut-Cherry Macaroons? Ladies: The LADIES’ PAGE has been created at your request and is featured in the first English issue of each month. GADABOUTS Although Dame Fashion seems to be lying dormant during these last few weeks of winter, you may feel assured that that is not the case. The good woman is as busy as can be, working and pondering over the new spring styles! Having taken a generous peep into her crystal ball, I predict for the advance Spring fashions— Tweed and more tweed! And suits innumerable! The coats are still a bit longer this year than they were last season, making it possible for designers to concentrate their efforts on clever pockets. Instead of the conventional two button affairs, some of the well tailored suits button right up to the collarless neckline! Very English looking! Very smart! I predict gray to be one of the leading colors in the Easter Parade this April, for it is adaptable to almost any shade of accessories. Red in particular seems to add that needed touch of dash to gray tweed! Dark gabardine slippers, black blue or gray, trimmed with reptile skin, will be the best sellers 4 egg whites % cup candied cherries 1 cup shredded cocoanut 1 cup powdered sugar. Beat up the egg whites until very stiff and dry, fold in carefully the powdered sugar, the cocoanut and the cherries. Mix up lightly and drop by spoonfuls on paraffin or oiled paper, and bake a delicate brown in a slow oven. * * * It doesn’t have to be any special occasion for these Cherry Tarts to get a big hand from the entire family. Why don’t you try them? Simple to make! 2 cups flour 3 teaspoons baking powder % teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon sugar 1 egg 2 tablespoons shortening % cup milk. Sift dry ingredients together; add well beaten egg, and shortening (melted) to milk, and add to dry mixture to make a soft dough. Roll out on floured board, and cut with medium sized biscuit cutter. Then take small size cutter and cut % of these rounds again. Brush the large rounds with melted butter. Lay smaller rings on top of larger ones. Place a spoonful of cherry jam in the center of each. Bake in hot oven for 10 minutes. The small centers can be brushed with butter, baked in the same manner, and served as small tea biscuits. There now we have a few ol my favorite party recipes, friends, so until you hear from me again, your Aunt Mary wishes you all the best February has fb offer! in many of the leading booteries. Reptile is making a bigger bid for popularity this year than it has for many seasons past! For later in the spring, or perhaps even now for your Southern cruise, there are adorable pumps of white buck hand laced on call skin. Comfortable, practical and flattering! In one of the new advance Easter bonnets you can really achieve that “new and quaint look.” Old fashioned quaintness added to the smart simplicity of the present can really do things for a girl! Minute shiny natural straw sailors with flowing veils, hand braided pink straw bonnets trimmed with multicolored flowers, bonnets with pale blue,, taffeta chin-straps and side bow— all are in the lead for choice in chapeaux. Incidentally, they give one the appearance of just having stepped out of a daguerreotype! That new look!! Gloves, purses and other accessories all promise to be as equally exciting and interesting! But for those we shall have to wait a few more weeks. In the interim though, and just in case there are a few readers still interested in winter apparel, I saw— An adorable high pile alpaca teddy bear jacket, light hued, lined with bright flannel. This jacket happens to be equally smart for sports or evening wear! A Swiss peasant ski jacket, very gay with appliqued leaves ol various shades and silversmith buttons. You can get the typical peasant caps that tie under the chin to match these jackets-. For braving the winter storms still to come, there is nothing better than a three cornered scarf of waterproof oiled silk to tie over your curls. Clever “babushkas” gone modern! A bit far away from the "things to wear” department, but very noteworthy is the line ol pottery called Coventry ware There is such a fresh and natural beauty about even the smallest piece of this work that I believe within a very short time no modern home will be complete without a few choice selections. There is also a very clever threeway lamp with a five tube radio built into the base, the young ones away at school would more than appreciate a gift of this sort. The aerial, of course, is built in. From New York comes word that Scarab Bracelets are way ahead in the choice of jewelry. The stones delicately carved are mounted in sterling silver, and the bracelets are obtainable with either five large or seven smaller stones. To see them is to want not only one, but a pair! Well, that just about completes the Gadabouting session for this issue. There will be more spring ideas in the next edition! T
