The new year is here and the curtains will soon cast a shadow over January, altho we are just reporting on our annual Christmas Party. On behalf of our branch, we wish to thank, the Radies of the committee for their splendid work and cooperation with Mr. Johnnie Mantz, chairman. The party was a grand success. There being plenty to eat and drink, plus singing old time songs and Christmas"' carols, under the lilting baton of Mr. Joseph Sikora. Delicious pastries were given by Mrs. Louis Torda, Miss Goldie Zsednay, Miss Frances Schwartz and Miss Ann V. Biro. And just to be out of the ordinary, Miss Zsednay played the part of old Kriss Kringle, in the exchange of gifts. A little twig, called a mistletoe, seemed to have been a perfect shade for couples, and there were a lat of them distributed throughout the room. A personal contribution from Mr. Johnnie Mantz was Porky’s alarm clock to the party. We have his word for a detailed demonstration as to how it operates. Guests of honor were Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Szalay and Mr. and Mrs. Drotos. Mr. Szalay is first vice-president and director of our Association; Mr. Drotos is president of Branch 45. Mr. J. J. Horvath wishes to thank Mrs. Green, of the Home Office, for her nice Christmas card. The Ferret, of Dearborn, Michigan, is entitled to an apology, which is humbly offered because of not answering other correspondence from The Ferret. The Horvaths are a tough lot, eh, Ferret? And say, Ferret, how do you rate two columns? Anyway, we hope to be visiting Detroit pretty soon. And oh Ferret, we do want to see those beautiful Dearborn girls. Promise? After much persuasion, some of the members decided to leave bowling to come up for the initial meeting of the year, at which Mr. John Fritz, Jr., newly elected president, presided. Our new sergeant at arms, Mr. Louis Torda, displayed the American Flag, with the able assistance of prexy. And from all observations, the new officers were just a bit nervous. This was only natural since it was their first meeting. Mr. Edward Sepessy was again appointed parliamentarian. Thanks, Mr. Sepessy, for your helpful services throughout the past year and in this year. Mr. Edward Sepessy and Mr. J. J. Horvath were elected delegates to the United Hungarian Societies, Miss Elsie Kolozsvary was elected sick visitor. Mr. Johnnie Mantz was elected entertainment committee chairman. Mr. and Mrs. Louis Torda were elected to attend a banquet at a West Branch 96 -A very interesting meeting was held Friday, January 9, 1941, in Prokop’s Hall, by Branch 96. After the minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved, preparations for the Membership Drive and Picnic, sponsored by the Chicago District in commemoration of our organization’s 55th Anniversary, was discussed. The Membership Drive began January 1st and will end November 30th of this year. Twenty-six beautiful prizes in merchandise, or cash if preferred, will be awarded the winners, before Christmas. We are pleased to announce that Branch 96 has entered the contest. The picnic, in celebration of our 55th Jubilee, will be held Sunday, June 22nd, at Frank’s Grove, 115th and Homan Avenue, Chicago, Illinois. This site was selected because of its accomodation facilities: 10,000 people can be accomodated on the grounds and sufficient tables are provided so every family can spread their picnic basket. The dance hall, situated in the center of the grounds and surrounded by natural woods, can hold 500 couples at one time. There is ample space for baseball games, races and contests of various kinds. We are looking forward to meeting our fellow members from all 82 branches that belong to the CHICAGO DISTRICT, so that JUNE 22nd will be a VERHOVAY DAY long to be remembered. The next important subject was the preparing of a JUBILEE ALBUM. Plans are under way to secure advertisements and salutations for the Jubilee Book. All other business and communications taken care Side Lutheran church, Sunday, February 9, 1941. Plans for our annual picnic was discussed. The picnic will be held some time in July or August. Mr. Eddie Torda’s arguments on technicalities were very enlightening. Thank you, Mr. Torda. Here’s hoping we see more of you at our future meetings. Mr. Alex Horvath was entitled to some dividends. Said Mr. Horvath: “Where’s my dough?” Said we: “Your dough is in your bakery shop!” Fraternally, Bill Torda,, Publicity Agent. ■ Chicago, III. of, Mr. John Salancy, President of Branch 96, adjourned the meeting until the second Friday of next month, (February 14th).
