YOUNGSTOWN VERHOVAY GIRLS’ BOWLING TEAM Although it is rather late to be thinking of bowling, the picture above should inspire other Verhovay girls and women to organize their respective teams, and the results of their games, the social activities in connection with them, etc. should be reported for publication in the Journal. Remember, ladies, the Sport Page is your page as well as the men’s. The Youngstown Verhovay Girls’ Bowling Team is drawn from members of the four Youngstown branches, 12, 108, 364, and 514. This past bowling season was the first time that the Youngstown branches attempted to organize bowling teams, and the accomplishments of both the men and the women prove that this experiment was a success and will be continued. All but two of the girls pictured above never before bowled, but practice each week made them excellent bowlers. This fact should prevent any girl or woman from saying, “I never bowled a game,” ‘‘How could I play when I never engaged in sports?”, when asked to join a team. The same girls are now planning a tennis team for the summer, and Verhovay girls in Youngstown are asked to participate in the activities of the new tennis team. Behind these activities has been Director Frank Brogley, who has enthusiastically guided and supported these sports events and programs. An example of how well the Youngstown girls fared is shown below in their game of April 1, 1941: Youngstown Bowling News Two Verhovay teams participated Tuesday evening, April 1, 1941, in the Ladies’ Duckpin Tournament at Grand Alleys. This is a creditable showing in view of the fact that this is the first year the girls have bowled. The coaches for the team were Bob Padery and Joe Gregory. The cheering section at the tournament was upheld by our president, Frank Brogley.--------------o-------------BRANCH 288 SPORTS NOTICE Crescent, Ohio A newly organized, firstclass baseball team has been formed by Branch 288, with Joseph Barath, as its manager. The team is interested in matches with Verhovay teams only, and calls upon Detroit, Cleveland Youngstown, Pittsburgh, etc. for matches. Due to its membership in a league, the Branch 288 team can not play on Sundays, but has open dates for other days, particularly the holidays such as Independence Day (Fourth of July) and Labor Day. Write for matches. Fraternally, JOSEPH BARATH Manager R. F. D. 4 St. Clairsville, Ohio WINDBER GETS GOING The Windber Verhovay Baseball Team (Branches 33 of Windber, Pa., 59 of Scalp Level, Pa., 409 of Windber, Pa.) has begun its campaign to ring up as many victories for the 1941 season as possible, and to date has won 3 victories and suffered 2 defeats. The Windber team started its season by going on a batting rampage to defeat the Lilly Slavish Citizens Club by a score of 20—9. On Decoration Day, in a well played game on the Schelleburg Field, Windber tasted its first defeat, bowing to the New Paris Baseball Club by a close score of 4-3. Windber also lost its third game of the season by a score of 5—4, losing this game to Everett. Windber came back into stride to defeat Allport on June 8 by a score of 5—4. Then on Sunday, June 15, Windber continued in stride to defeat Colver by a score of 12—8. Windber will journey to Jacobs Creek on Sunday, June 29, to play the Jacobs Creek Baseball Team ' of Branch 396. The Windber Verhovay Baseball Team at this time wishes to express its thanks to all officers and players who are or were instrumental in helping to launch our 1941 season. The team recently held its election of officers for the 1941 season, and the results are as follows: President, Louis Vassy; Secretary, Louis Kiss; Treasurer, B a r b e y; Manager, Mike Charney; Business Manager, Hez. Phillips; Captain, Joseph Friday. The schedule for this team calls for 37 games this season. The weather conditions have caused us to postpone 2 games so far this year, but we hope to play those games on some future date. The Windber club wishes at this time to thank the sports editor of the Verhovay Journal for his cooperation in publishing their challenge to other Verhovay teams, as well as other news about the club. We again ask all Verhovay teams to contact us, as it is our desire to play as many Verhovay teams as is possible. Fraternally, Hez. Phillips, Jr. Business Manager A TRIBUTE TO LOU GEHRIG You’ll never be forgotten in the minds of baseball fans, Your name will always enlighten the people in different lands, Your title will live forever as the years go by and by; You, ‘‘The Iron Horse” of baseball, to us will never die. You were the most valuable player—no one could take your place, You won every game, you never gave up, until you had won that race; We know how hard you had fought to lick, that thing that was tougher than you, But it finally caught up, and stood on the base, of the best guy of the whole crew. You’re gone now, Lou, but we’ll never forget, when the other boys go up to bat, They’ll do it like Lou, and by it win thru, to Lou Gehrig, we take off our hat! —Margaret Panyi Branch 237 Steubenville, Ohio.--------------O--------------YOUNGSTOWN GIRLS ORGANIZING TENNIS TEAM: SEEK RECRUITS The Youngstown Verhovay Girls’ Bowling Team, composed of the four Youngstown branches, 21, 108, 364 and 514, and who recently completed a successful bowling season, are organizing a tennis team for the summer season. Come on, girls, prove that the Sport Page belongs to you, too, by forming your team and sending in the scores for publication on the Sport Page of the Journal.
