February 27, 1941 Verhovayak Lapja Page 5 It's a Great Day — March 11 — for McKeesport's Branch 395 Members STATE OF OHIO EXECUTIVE DEPARTMENT OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR Columbus PROCLAMATION HUNGARIAN DAY IN OHIO WHEREAS, the American Hungarian Federation, representing American citizens of Hungarian origin, is leading a movement for the preservation of an independent Hungary and WHEREAS, the Federation is planning to hold mass meetings throughout the United Slates where citizens of Hungarian origin are living, to urge action, within the limitations of the Constitution and Raws of the . United States, to preserve an indepenedent Hungary, and WHEREAS, the Federation has designated March 15th as the date for these mass meetings, _ , NOW. THEREFORE, I, John W. Bricker, in compliance with the request ol the American Hungarian Federation, do hereby proclaim March 15th as Hungarian Day in the State of Ohio. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the State of Ohio to be affixed at Columbus this fifteenth day of February in the year of our Lord, One Thousand Nine Hundred and Forty-one. (Seal) BY THE GOVERNOR: (Signed) JOHN W. BRICKER. (Signed) JOHN E. SWEENEY Secretary of State. Our readers will recall that in previous years they saw similar proclamations of other states and other governors appear in the Verhovay Journal. But in view of the tragic events now taking placc in war-torn Europe, the above proclamation has a double significance in that it will not only be a commemoration of a great day in history but also the signal calling upon a gallant people to take up again its- thou 'and year old struggle for liberty and independence. The independence of Hungary, as occurred more than once in the past, is again at stake, this time by a nation supposedly friendly to the Hungarian nation, a power only too willing to sacrifice even its friends for the accomplishment of its selfish ends. Already the Hungarians SECTION I. The year 1941 marks th< end of the hibernatior period of Branch 395 of McKeesport, Pa. No longei will this branch be conteni to sit back to watch the pa rade pass by. From now or the members will marcl right back to the covetec land of glory and success. From 1934 to 1938 Brand 395 was among the leader: of the English-speaking branches. Strife within th< ranks during 1939 and 194( relegated it to a secondclass role. The recent elec tion of officers have pres ented, once again, a uniter front. The leadership will b< on a par with the past sue cessful official bodies. With this united front we shall go into battle to achieve victory. The newly elected president, John Sabo, directs an urgent appeal to all members of Branch 395 to make it their duty to attend the great reorganization meeting to be held at our regular meeting hall on Tuesday, March 11, 1941. Every Verhovay policyholder of Branch 395 is requested to mark the figure “11” on his calendar with red pencil. It will be the RED LETTER DAY of Branch 395. The destinies of the branch will be determined by those attending this all-important meeting. We particularly desire the attendance of all those who have remained out of Verhovay branch life. Regardless of past experiences we request you to attend this meeting to let us convince you that life can be so much are the innocent, downtrodden victims of a menace that seems to know no bounds, that says that “necessity knows no law,” and it is feared that the “symbolic” independence that still remains to Hungary will soon feel the crunch of the aggressor’s jowls. Under the leadership ol the American Hungarian Federation, an organization which stands for the best interests of Americans of Hungarian origin, March 15th, commemorating the day on which the great Hungarian liberator, Louis Kossuth, declared the independence of Hungary will witness the inauguration of a movement designed to preserve the independence of Hungary and to keep her among the nations striving for the democratic wav of life. more pleasant and so much more enjoyable if you learn the meaning of true friendship and real cooperation. You have everything to gain and nothing to lose. On March 11th, we expect — and rightly so — the largest turnout of members of this branch’s history. To give you an idea of what we can accomplish, let me ask you this question. “Would you like to attend a conference of young people from several district branches?” — an honest to goodness real live-wire conference full of fun from morning till night — travel, spiritual guidance, lunches, debates, bowling contests, a huge banquet, topped by a dance that would leave only the fondest of memories. I believe I can honestly say that 99% of the membership is already interested. Besides this we can work toward goals just as good. This will be your opportunity to get in on the ground floor of this new ventuxe, and we do believe that we will have a “hit.” This meeting is being widely publicized. All members will receive a special invitation from the president. The local “Daily News” will carry accounts from time to time. Several members have been asked to pass the word around about our all-important meeting. Our goal for attendance this night will be 100 faithful Vei’hovay membeis. A pleasant surprise wall be in store for all loyal membeis. SECTION II. ATTENTION:—ALL PUBLICITY DIRECTORS OF VERHOVAY BRANCHES IN THE UNITED STATES. Branch 395 extends to you its sincerest greetings. For a long time we have remained out of the official circulation of the Verhovay Journal. We have regretted this and now hope to make amends. McKeesport will again offer battle for leadership in any or all fields. We will back up our ever-growing, everimproving Jómmal and our beloved man behind the scenes. Mr. Albert Jozik’s plea for more branch news will be answered. Please watch us grow. Our first suggestion to all branches is a special anniversary edition of the Journal to be made up strictly of news from all Englishspeaking branches. No branch would think of being left out of such a commemorative issue. Think it over and write a few lines in your columns or to the editor, by letter. Don’t neglect to do your part. SECTION III NOTES OF INTEREST. At the present time Branch 395 is holding only one meeting a month. The se- ■ cond Tuesday night of each month is Verhovay get-to- j gether night. Meetings are held in the auditorium of the First Hungarian Reformed Church, corner of j Eigth and Strawberry Sts. All meetings begin promptly 1 at 8:30. i Members are urged to pay dues to Secretary Alex Goydan or to Treasurer Julius Lenart. Please do not allow yourself to get in arrears. Prompt payments are appreciated by the official body. Mrs. Kenneth Norman, j our vice-president, certainly deserves a lot of thanks. She has helped in various ways to keep the sparks of interest alive. We certainly wish we had more members like Mrs. Norman. Mrs. Norman is Branch 395’s culinary expert, or in plain English, our No. 1 cook. The Round Table apparently has cracked a couple j of legs, but it won’t be down long. Success always comes to those who are patient. A slow start is better than no start at all. We want to take this opportunity to extend our congratulations to Mr. William C. Kölnit of Branch 430, Homestead. Pa. We hope i that every mile of his new Chevrolet will mean lots of smiles for our Verhovay. It is rumored that Mr. Elmer Halas, ex-president of Branch 395, will leave the city soon. Mr. Halas is with the United States Air Corps stationed at County Andort, Pittsburgh, Pa. Here’s lots of luck to one of the best presidents we ever had. Miss Manci V. Sand wants our branch to sponsor a bowling tournament for our members. Why not get behind this movement at our next meeting. In case you're interested, here’s a list of the presidents of our branch from the first to the present year: 1934 — John Sabo. Jr. 1935 — John Sabo, Jr. jj 1936 — John Sabo, Jr. | 1937 — John Lucas. 1938 — Julius Lenart. 1939 — Julius Lenart. 1940 — Elmer Halas. 1941 — John Sabo, Jr. Branch life offers exceptional training and experience to the youngster in his upper teens. Many of our members are now working for good reputable companies, holding worthwhile positions. We are certain that the experience they acquired at our branch meetings mean quite a bit to them. In conclusion, we again want to remind all members to remember our RED LETTER REORGANIZATION DAY. March 11, 1941, Tuesday night at 8 o’clock. P. S. “A cheery smile makes life worth while, so please, please leave yout pet peeves at home on the night of March 11th.” Fraternally yours, JOHN SABO. Jr. President Branch 395. ATTENTION!
