RÉVÉSZ KÁLMÁN, kpi számvevő HÁ30RU DEARBORN, MICH.—With the nation’s high schools preparing fo' second semester activities, th Ford Good Driver’s League today announced details o*f its 191.' good driving contest, in which $25,800 in scholarships will be awarded boys and girls of high school age throughout the country. Started last year by Edsel Ford to promote improved driving and increase motoring safety among youth, the Good Drivers League embarks on its second season with one major innovation that is expected to more than double th' membership. Where the nation-wide 1940 good driving contests were open only to boys, the 1941 contest will be open to girls as well as boys. This major change in the I League program already has produced widespread interest, with indications that girls are fully as anxious as the boys to demonstrate their knowledge and skill at handling an automobile. Under the new rules set up by Mr. Ford as League president and his national advisory board, girls will compete in a separate division, while the boys also will have a section of their own. There will be no mixed contest. As awards for the national winners, Mr. Ford revealed that 98 Good Drivers League scholarships would be presented as follows, with identical awards for both the boy and girl divisions: First prize, $5,000 university scholarship; second prize, 2,000 university scholarship; third, fourth and fifth prizes, each $500 scholarships; and the next winners, $100 each. The contests are open to boys and girls between 14 and 18. In order to qualify for membership in the Ford Good Drivers League, all entrants must be qualified and legally authorized to drive a car in the state in which they reside. We feel that over the years the Ford Good Drivers League can and will make an increasingly important contribution to the cause of good driving and to increase safety on our streets and highways. “It is hoped that this year’s League activity will prove highly interesting to many civic organizations, safety clubs, public officials and schools whose help last year in furthering the work and objectives of the League is gratefully acknowledged.” Each state, according to Mr. Ford, will have its own elimination contest to select the boy and girl state champion driver, as well as a runner-up in each division. A separate elimination contest will be held this year in the District of Columbia. Last year Washington, D. C., entrants competed in the Maryland state contest. State competition throughout the nation is scheduled for next July, 1, bringing together at a central point in each state the 12 leading boy and 12 best girl contestants. They will be chosen by the League board of judges on the basis of a road test under a qualified observer, a letter on the subject of safe driving, and their answers to a questionnaire on cjriving. In each of the 49 state final contest, safety experts assigned by the League board of judges will rate the boys and girls on their driving ability in “on the spot” tests. The 49 boys and 49 girls chosen as state champions will be invited to compete in the national finals to be held in Dearborn, starting Aug. 6. In the finals, a series of comprehensive tests similar to those given last year at the finals on the New York World's Fair grounds will be used again. These include day and night driving tests, all under the auspices of the board of judges, assisted by a group of nationally known safety experts. Winners of the 98 scholarships will be announced at the League’s second ‘annual banquet of champions on Aug. 11 in Dearborn. Last year the first award of a $5,000 university scholarship was won by Gene M. Kennard of Evansville, Indiana. Jimmie Hymer of Phoenix, Arizona, won the second award, a $2,000 scholarship. Not eligible for awards in the contest are the 1940 state champions; sons and daughters ot members of the League board of judges and the League advisory board; and employes and sons and daughters of Ford Motor Company employes and dealers. Registration blanks can be obtained from Ford dealers or by writing to the national headquarters of the Ford Good Drivers League, Dearborn, Mich. Upon registration, entrants will receive a kit of material that includes a book entitled “How To Become a Skilled f) river,” membership card, a membership button and detailed instructions about the contests.
