SECTION TWO ENGLISH EDITION 'V e r h o v a y J o u r n a l VOLUME XXIII. JULY 25, 1940 NO. 30. Shall American Youth Again Fight, Bleed and Die in Europe and Asia? By STEPHEN HUZIANYI “Europe has a set of primary interests which to us have none or a very remote relation. Hence she must be engaged in frequent controversies, the causes of which are essentially foreign to our concerns. Hence, therefore, it must be unwise in us to implicate ourselves by artificial ties in the ordinary vicissitudes of her politics or the ordinary combinations and collisions of her friendships or enmities.’’ i , —From Washington’s Farewell Address * * * Who among both the young and old readers of the Verhovay Journal want to get our country involved in Europe’s or Asia’s wars? Who want to see us become entangled in foreign alliances? Not many, I am sure. Should we become involved, no matter by what subterfuge, it would mean only economic disaster, regimentation such as we have never seen, and the horrible, useless, slaughter of millions of American youth—who want no part in Europe’s power politics. We would rear millions of maimed veterans, countless orphans, widows and Gold Star Mothers. And when the battle would clear, postwar national ruin would be imminent. A halt must be called to the hypocrisy existent today because some laud peace through lip service but underhandedly are leading this nation toward inevitable entanglement from which there can be no backward step, thus dragging us by degrees into unknown battlegrounds outside this hemisphere. How can this halt be made? In many different ways. Since this concerns mainly the youth who would be called upon to sacrifice, “to do or die,” it is for them to demand from our government in Washington that no secret alliances be entered into with any nation, that no information of the activities of our diplomats and representatives be withheld from the people. Public opinion is still a factor to be reckoned with. Our government is still a government of the people, by the people and for the people. We are interested in the welfare and safety of Americans and not of any foreign nation or empire, and have no desires to participate in any foreign war, BELIEVE IT OR NOT. Even President Roosevelt said in his Chautauqua address, August 14, 1936: “We can jteep out of war if those who watch and decide have a sufficiently detailed understanding of international affairs to mate certain that the small decisions of each day do not lead toward war and if, at the same time, they possess the courage to say ‘no- to those who selfishly or unwisely would let us go to war.” 0 But is this caution and sane thought evident today? Screeching newspaper headlines and subtle propaganda do not lead us to think so. Just why all this war hysteria? Americans who wish to stay in America should get busy and demand that their representatives and senators keep them out of wars in Europe and Asia. They should insist that our armed forces remain to defend this hemisphere: insist that Congress remain in session during the present crisis in Europe, insist that Congress exercise its power over the executive department. If you are an American, AND AMERICAN ONLY, it is your duty to write your representative before it is too late. It is your duty to save democracy right here while it still exists. It is your duty to live for these United States, not for Europe. There are various organizations in this country which do not want to see our youth unnecessarily slaughtered “Yes, Al, I’m doing fine.” ‘You know it’s not at all hard to recruit new members. A brief talk on Verhovay’s merits is enough.” you making out in Verhovay’s 19 4 0 Membership Contest?” “I understand you are doing well.” Say Bill howre ITS DIFFERENT Life insurance protection is different from anything else in the world. Other things you can get when you want them and more particularly when you need them. Life insurance must be obtained when you need it least. You can buy your rubbers when it begins to rain. You can purchase your overcoat when winter approaches. You can step into a restaurant and eat when you are hungry, but you can’t get life insurance when you are sick. Nine times out of ten you do not buy a thing until in some way or other you feel that you need it. You can’t rely on any help of that kind when it is a question of getting life insurance for your family. Protection for your home can be obtained today cheaper than tomorrow or any other day ahead of you. The need of your family, the uncertainty of life and the certainty of death should be the guide of every one in the matter of home protection. Today is your day and mine. The only day we have. Let’s play our part manfully, now. We are here today. Now is the time.
