Our especial gratitude for this new “Ladies’ Page” goes to Miss Betty Carol Balega, already well known by the Journal readers, who has graciously offered her services to conduct the page. Some months ago we advertised for six permanent additions to the English Journal. The response has been such that we already have most of those requests. We have the “Sport Page” for the boys and men, altho the page is open also to our athletic-minded and sportsminded girls and young woWell, my fair lassies, to me has fallen the task of conducting the newly inaugurated page for women and girls in the Journal. Since the task itself is really more of an adventure than anything else, I hope that all my readers are of the same opinion before this page is many months older. If my plans turn out as I hope they will, you shall have a little of this and a little of that. We shall see just what the well dressed co-ed is wearing, and to what affairs; what the latest perfumery and jewelry are like; which shall be the leading colors in female apparel; perhaps a bit or two about cosmetics; not forgetting, of course, a column on what Aunt Mary is doing men; we have, thanks to Miss Amelia Nyers, the “Children’s Page,” for our Verhovay children; we have high quality poems and excellent short stories; now we have the “Ladies’ Page.” Other improvements will come along gradually because our members are beginning to realize more and more that the English Journal is THEIR Journal, that its improvement and enlargement reflects their character and abilities, and that there is a great deal of selfsatisfaction derived from reading one’s literary accomplishments. Ladies, this new page is your page. You are invited tc send in your suggestions and contributions. Miss Balega is no more interested in monopolizing the “Ladies’ Page” than Miss Nyers is in monopolizing the “Children’s Page.” We received requests for the “Ladies’ Page” from our women and girl members; the request was granted; the page is here. Please make the most of it. in the kitchen. Yes, I realize that is certainly a long list of plans, and perhaps shall take some time to perfect; but if you will bear with me, I am quite positive it can all be arranged to the satisfaction of everyone. Cooperation from my readers? Absolutely. All suggestions and new ideas are welcome no end! And contributions too! So gather round, ye gals, and rally to the call! Let it be made publically known that from this day hence this page is strictly the property of the ladies and from it all members of that socalled stronger sex are barred and prohibited! Cheerio! BETTY CAROL BALEGA. THE AMERICAN RED CROSS JOIN No page that the ladies read is complete during these days without some mention of the Red Cross activities. Production centers have sprung up almost overnight in most of the cities in the United States, and the work that is being carried on is very admirable. Girls, really you can even get away with a shiny nose with the best boy friend lately, or being late for a date, just so long as you can proudly display a Red Cross sweater that you are knitting. Helping the less fortunate is one of the basic rules upon which civilization has been founded, and* the credo of our Red Cross is to render service. So if you happen to have a few extra minutes or an empty afternoon, why not drop into your nearest Chapter headquarters and offer your services, to be used in whatever capacity they are most required. You will discover that you only get out of life exactly what you put into it; and I can tell you from personal experience, the glow of achievement after knitting or sewing for the Red Cross is something not easily forgotten. Won’t you see what you can do today? —Betty Carol Balega.--------------------O-------------------Califoma conservation officials use a battery operated compressor to aerate the water in cans in which 50, 000,000 small fish are transported to streams and lakes annually. Really it is quite the most thrilling thing to go shopping these days with all the new costume jewelry and clever little whatnots being shown. Wouldn’t you just love to buy up every one that strikes your fancy? After a day of plain browsing about, I take out my little black note book and here is exactly what I have to report: Real acorns are being designed into clever necklaces and bracelets. The colors of course are various shades of browns, and they match ’most any one of the new fall colors in frocks, hats, and coats. Glass bubbles blown so thin that they look just like soap bubbles also make a frothy chain at both wrist and the neck line. Too cute for words! Unless you have a hood of some sort this season, gals, you had better hurry to your favorite shop for one immediately, or you’ll be definitely out of the swing of things. They were worn at first just as a passing fancy, but now they have become a necessity in keeping pretty necks warm. Then, of course, there are the rabbit fur mittens, a real protection these days when old Jack Frost is trying his best to nip dainty finger tips. In footwear we have oodles and oodless of new styles, the most conspicuous are the slippers with the transparent oi carved heels; the former every bit as durable as the heels you have been wearing for years and years, until Science gave us the composition called lucite. Have you seen the latest in socks? They’re knee length and made of heavy wool! Most of the girls are knitting their own, using a chain stitch design for a bit of variation. All shades are good, but bright lip-stick red has the edge an the rest. Madame’s chapeaux this fall follow the pompadour trend, and practically everything is worn off the face. For sports-wear the Stetsons are still in very good taste, and ,for ihorseback riding there is the traditional derby. Ascots are being worn more and more, especially with open throated corduroy suits. Try one whose color contrasts vividly with your suit, girls, and see what a change it makes. You can even brighten up one of last year’s outfits with a few inexpensive scarfs. Silhouettes are more on the slender side than they have been for a few seasons. Hips are going again, and the waistline simply must have that elongated look. No more wtasp waists or figure eights, hour glasses, or what have you. No sir, the figure is returning to normal again. Have you noticed all the patriotically colored accessories? Red, white, and blue are certainly tops with us! Purses, gloves, hats, and most everything are being made up in our colors. Clever little lapel gadgets of rhinestones are really smart. Just the right scent for that football game is Lucien Lelong’s Robin Hood, quite sporty, and the men love it! Girls, the new shades of nail polish are simply divine, ai d so varied; your choice mam’selle, from the shy pinks to the deep blackreds. If your nails are shaped well enough and your hands are smooth enough to put on display, try one of the latter shades. You may lack the courage to put the first application on, but, believe you me, there is nothing quite like a new hat and a new shade of lipstick and polish to give you a lift when your spirits are low. Well, the next page in my little black note book is blank, so until I get a chance to fill it again, I’ll be waiting to hear from you— all of you! —Betty Carol Balega.--------------------O-------------------Worn with the usual harness, an aviator has invented a parachute that serves as a head and shoulder rest.
