SUMMER STOCK SEASON CLOSES By BETTY CAROL BALEGA ¥%g* I______________________________________ With the presentation of “Springtime For Henry,” featuring Edward Everett Horton, John Kenley’s Deer Lake Theatre sang its swan song for the summer season of 1940. The play, a rollicking bit of frivolity, in all actuality appears to have been written for the highly esteemable Mr. Horton, the title role fitting him like the proverbial glove. Viewing the play from backstage my first night, your correspondent received a general idea as to how a play is really presented to the audience. Meeting Edward Everett Horton with Lewis Martin and Cyrilla Dorne, who accompanied him on their customary territory, and watching their smooth and unruffled ability in action, was quite a thrill. During my interview with Mr. Horton the next afternoon, he proved himself not only an intelligent conversationalist but also a charming host, and I discovered the following facts about one of Hollywood's best loved comedians— After closing the summer season at Deer Lake he joins his niece, Isabella Horton Grant, who is entering Swarthmore as a freshman, in Philadelphia. He is quite an antique collector, which of course pleased me no end! “Once A Gentleman” was his best characterization of a butler in the cinema, and ' Ten Dollar Raise” and “Lost Horizon” his best roles. The reason for an audience’s spontaneous response to his comedy, which was made very clear at Deer Lake, is because he unconsciously reminds people of some one they know or have laughed at In every day life. He believes there are no “born comedians,” as a successful comic is always borrowing on years of past experimentations for laughs. He can not truthfully say he prefers stage work to the cinema or vice versa. “Can’t I like them both equally as well?” queried Mr. H., and I very graciously told him he could! During his stay at the Kenley Theatre he annexed or rather had been annexed by a oollie dog, Ronnie by name and veiy, veiy friendly! Incidentally, Mr. H. acquired a walking stick to keep the affectionate canine at aim’s length. Finally, by September 18th, he will be back in Hollywood beginning work on his new Paramount picture, “You’re The One,” with Bonnie Baker and Orrin Tucker. (I shall be waiting for the release of that show with great expectation, Mr H.!) Now that the final curtain has been rung down for 1940, let us see whom we have left to say au revoir to— Johnnie Kenley, hats off to him for splending bookings, excellent management, and his efforts to please the public. Barney Eberhardt, there is so much to be said about his ability and versatility it would take columns to cover eveiything. Best of luck, Barney, am expecting to see you in a choice role soon. Pert Keltőn, this lass goes to Boston to begin work as a featured comedienne in “Return Engagement.” Ralph Bell leaves for New York and very green pastures, we hope. Caroline Zimmerman returns to Mt. Holyoke as a sophomore. Lewis Martin, after working with Raymond Massey in “Abe Lincoln In Illinois,” then summer stock; he now leaves for New York. Cyrilla Dorne, to New York, the ultimate destination of all theatre folk. Add to the list Jack Bums and John Norton, and that will close the very doors of the theatre itself. Following is the cast of Benn W. Levy’s “Springtime For Henry”— A Secretary — Caroline Zimmerman. Mr. Dewlip — Edward Everett Horton. Mr. Jelliwell — Lewis Martin. Mrs. Jelliwell — Pert Keltőn. Miss Smith — Cyrilla Dome.--------------O-------------TWO SOCIAL EVENTS COMING FOR BRANCH 40 Martins Ferry, Ohio Having successfully carried out its Labor Day program of a Hungarian dance and other social activities, including an athletic event. If you remember, Elsie -is the girl voted the most popular girl for 1940, and wears the crown “Miss Verhovay of Branch 164.” During the contest I published the rules and mentioned the prizes that were to be awarded. I also predicted that the winner of the crown would get a husband before the year was over. That prediction is coming true for on October 26th, Andy and Elsie will make their wedding vows. In behalf of Branch 164, I want to wish them all the happiness possible throughout the years. * * * “To the Verhovay Members of 164. A Little Note of ‘Thanks’ reading: 'Thanks a lot.
