HUNGARIAN STAMPS TO HELP FLOOD VICTIMS

April thaws surging hundreds of square miles under water, the task fell to the defence forces of Hungary, numbering some half-a-million men, to protect vital arteries of trafic and, above all, human life. In spite of flood-control work executed with military precision, material losses are still enormous, for over 12,000 houses will have to be rebuilt all over the country.

Upon the plea of Regent Miklós Horthy, all classes of the population rushed to the aid of the flood victims, either work or donations.

Postal authorities likewise hastened to issue a stamp bearing a 20 fillér value, carrying a one-pengő surcharge for flood relief purposes. It comes in a commemorative sheet, but contrary to other similar Hungarian adhesives, it carries full postal value up to 20 fillérs, the equivalent of about 4 cents. The releasing date was May 6th, and, since only 100,000 sheets were printed, it may be anticipated that the issue will be sold out before May 31st, after which date its postal validity ceases.

Contrary to more common Hungarian issues, only two of this flood-relief stamp are sold to a customer, which may add to its desirability from a philatelic point of view. The attractive design, bearing the style of Sándor Légrády, shows a private of the Hungarian army, working with sleeves rolled up on a dike, protecting a mother and her two children who stand in the background.

Color of this denomination is green, printed on water-marked paper, size 22X33 millimeters, with 2 millimeters added around for perforation. The commemorative sheet itself is of parchment-like finish; bearing, above the stamp, elements of Hungarian heraldry; the apostolic cross, mounted on a triple peak,

The sum to be collected through this special issue is, indeed, just a drop in the bucket in providing the necessary capital for flood relief purposes, it is reliably reported that material damage exceeds the equivalent of 15 million dollars, an amount Hungaiy will have difficulty in finding with her exports materially cut off from the rest of the peaceful world.

FELHÍVÁS AZ AMERIKAI MAGYAR ÍRÓKHOZ!

A Budapesten 1926-ban dr. Ványi Ferenc szerkesztésében és a Stadium R. T. kiadásában megjelent Magyar Irodalmi Lexikon második kiadása előkészületben van. Ez a magyar állam területén kivül élő és magukat magyarnak valid Írókról is az eddiginél teljesebb képet akar adni. A Lexikon szerkesztősége felhívja az amerikai magyar Írókat, hogy kimerítő személyi adataikat a Hungarian Reference Library, 19 West 44th Street, New York City címére megküldeni szíveskedjenek.

A Magyar Irodalmi Lexikon csak azoknak az íróknak adatait közli, kiknek szépirodalmi müvük jelent meg önálló formában: verses, novellás kötet, regény vagy irodalmi tárgyú értekezés. A Magyar Könyvtár azonban adatgyűjtést végez Gulyás Pál múzeumi igazgató szerkesztésében megjelenő Magyar Írók Élete és Munkái számára is s ez utóbbiban helyet kapnak, nemzetiségre, társadalmi állásra és foglalkozásra való tekintet nélkül, mindazok, akik önálló kötetben vagy akár magyar, akár más nyelvű lapokban és folyóiratokban bármily csekély s bármily irányú vagy tárgykörű irodalmi munkásságot kifejtettek. Az adatok közlése komoly tudományos munkákról lévén szó semmi kötelezettséget az adatok beküldőire nem jelent. Mindkét lexikon számára a következő adatokat kell beküldeni.^

1. Vezeték és keresztnév. Fölvett Írói név használata esetén az eredeti családi név Is közlendő.

2. Születés helye, éve, hónapja és napja.

3. Szülök neve és foglalkozása.

4. Mikor, hol és milyen iskolát végzett.

5. Mi a foglalkozása.

6. Mely folyóiratokban és hírlapokban, mely években és minő tárgyú dolgozatai jelentek meg magyar vagy más nyelven.

7. Könyv vagy füzet alakjában megjelent eredeti és fordított müveinek címjegyzéke a megjelenés helyének és évének feltüntetésével.

10. Mily időszaki vagy egyéb kiadványokat s mikor szerkesztett.
