BECAUSE you will want to win one of the valuable prizes which are so desirable that the« induce you to a greater and tireless effort. OTTO J. MOLNÁR Chief Organizer. Letters to the Editor The newest Membership Contest, to date undoubtedly offering the greatest and most compensating awards was begun by the Verhovay Fraternal Insurance Association on February 1st. This is not just “another” contest. Like all the previous contests sponsored and conducted by the Verhovay Fraternal Insurance Association, this latest one, too, contains fresh interests in the natur« of novelty of awards and modification in the matter of securing points for eligibility to participate in the contest and become a prize winner. The attractive awards and their number make it relatively easy and quite possible for an ambitious earnestly working contestant to “run off” with one of the 49 appealing prizes. The rules of the contest are very simple and contain no complications to frighten away a potential participant in the contest. To mention only a few of the 49 awards to be given to the lucky winners, there is the first prize of $1000.00. Think of it! $1000.00. How would you and you or you like to be awarded the cheerful sum of $1000.00? Yes, that amount of money makes one’s eyes pop even In our own United States of America, the wealthiest country in the world. You can well realize this fact if you stop to think that few are those who in a lifetime can accumulate $1000.00. It certainly is unnecessary to go into detail about what you could do with that sum of money. But this is only one of the awards, even though it is the first.. Five secondary awards of 5 beautiful new automobiles follow. Although we can again refer to our wonderful fatherland in stating that America has the most motor cars in the world, there are many of us here who haven’t cars or have obsolete automobiles, who would like to own new automobiles but who are hesitant to do so because of the economic uncertainty in our world of today. Here is a golden opportunity for ambitious contestants to get five brand new and well known automobiles, without having to worry about a down payment or transactions with a finance company. The 43 other prizes are proportionately attractive and quite useful, but limited space prohibits further expansion on the subject. In every issue of the English journal (and the Hungarian) there will appear prominently the announcement of the Verhovay Membership Contest, the eye-opening awards, and the rules pertaining to the entry and fulfillment of the contest. Don’t say you’re not lucky. Luck is what you make it; it doesn’t control or shape your lives. Napoleon once said that he created and controlled circumstances. Perhaps his boasting was not entirely right, but luck is not the same thing. You create luck for yourself when you are ambitious. Your chance of winning the first prize of $1000.00 or one of the five secondary awards of America’s favorite ipode of transportation or one of the 43 other prizes is just as good as the other fellow’s, provided you work earnestly toward that goal. Don’t let this golden opportunity pass you by without your joining IMMEDIATELY in this nationwide Verhovay Membership Contest.--------:o:-------BRANCH 430 ELECTIONS The officers recently elected to head Branch 430 of Homestead, Pa. in 1940 are as follows: President, Stephen Nemeth; Vice-President, Bert Priam; Secretary-Treasurer, William C. Kohut; Auditor. Ethel Cincel; Controller, Steve Pastor and Sick Committee, John Penchuk and Emma Moskal. Verhovay Member Graduates JOHN RAYZ The secretary of Branch 39 of Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, Mr. Stephen Biro, has kindly sent us the facts about the graduation with honors of John Rayz, member of Branch 484 of the same c'fjy. One of the mid-term graduates of the Beaver Falls High School, young Mr. Rayz graduated with the high honors he held throughout high school and received the first award in mathematics. Both Duquesne University and Geneva College have offered Mr. Rayz scholarships. But 'the honor student and graduate was not entirely scholastic. He did not fail to follow the great love for sports which every redblooded American boy diligently pursues. The parents of the young graduate, Mr. and Mrs. John Rayz, can not help feel very happy for their ambitious son, as well as for their daughter Anna, who preceded her brother as an honor student and won a scholarship to the University of Pittsburgh which she is now attending. In spite of the fact (that John and Anna are 3-generation, or more properly 2- generation Hungarians, meaning that their parents too were born in this country, they speak Hungarian fairly well and are rightfully proud of their rich Magyar heritage. Verhovay wishes the brother and sister every good luck and godspeed in their scholastic endeavors and derives vicarious satisfaction because of their Verhovay membership. The newly reorganized English Section especially Verhovay Journal 345 Fourth Avenue, Pittsburgh, Pa. Advertising, we know, is essential for growth and essential for maintenance of growth. There is no doubt that the advertising methods practiced by the Verhovay has brought results, but X contend that this method has its limitations. Advertising, to bring best results, must be attracting, magnetic and appealing, which is quite impractical through newspapers ... the printed word, especially advertisements, are too often neglected by tired minds, evaded by those who seek enter taining features, while others are unimpressed by its message because it lacks the power of coercion. Radio has the most penetrating effect—since it does away with humdrum regularity of the printed, voiceless advertisement. Radio impounds, the listener absorbs without effort but effectively. The listener does not need to hunt and read impressive lines to impress himself; he may be too tired to read but seldom too tired to listen. The radio is unlimited in resources of attractive advertising. Below are a few suggestions. Perhaps members can and will offer other ideas: 1. At least one hour, on a station or stations that can be easily tuned and which will reach all Hungarians in the Eastern half of the States, at weekly, bi-weekly or whatever intervals would not make the cost prohibitive. feels this cheerful satisfaction, since John and Anna Rayz are Hungarian-AMERICANS. 2. Program for Hungarian or j member amateurs—a possible out* j let for Magyar talent which too j often is crowded off, in propor- i tion to other nationalities. 3. Hungarian folk songs; Gypsyj music (recorded, if necessary t® cut expense). 4. Medical advice; advice oa, safety precautions in the home. 5. Drama, stories, and news In. Hungarian. 7. Contests; or anything that proves popular. It is possible to interest other’ sponsors, nationality immaterial, who would share the expense oi the program. Programs can and should be advertised in newspapers in less* ened space, this would give feature and enliven the printed advertising. Criticism or praise, or other discussion of these programs can be directed at the Verhovay Journal, and thus give it another department of interest. Why not give it a fair trial f Respectfully, STEPHEN ROBERTS. Henderson, Md.-------------0-----------— BRANCH 442 of California, Pa. Changes Address The Young Men’s Club hall in California has been made the regular meeting place of Branch 442. The meetings will be held as before, that is, the second Sunday of every month. Fraternally yours, STEVE ZURO, Secretary. Attention, Contestants! The application blanks for entry in the new Verhovay Membership Contest may be secured from the secretary of your local branch. OTTO MOLNÁR, Chief Organizer.
