October 28, 1937 PAGE IS ■VerhovayokJgpjQ OUR ACTUARY’S COLUMN DO YOU KNOW? WHERE ARE YOUR CHILDREN? If membership in Verhovay Fraternal Insurance Association is a good thing for our Hungarian-American men and women, why is it not also just as good for their sons and daughters? Until our Juvenile Department has as many members as our Senior or Adult Department, I shall insist that our members are neglecting to bring their boys and girls into the Verhovay ranks. Man)' a father is most careful to keep his horses, cows, sheep, goats, chickens and even his pigs locked up during the night in their pens and stables and yet he does not care a fig where his children spend their evenings and nights. Of course, he realizes that colts, calves and pups are worth money. It is about time that our Verhovay membership get wise to themselves and induce their sons and daughters to become members of our Association. Why do you allow slick industrial insurance agents to make their living by selling your children high cost insurance when very much better protection can be secured from Verhovay at the actual cost of the same ? Do you realize that during the year 1937, three months dues are being credited to all juvenile members who for at least three years have had Class “A” or ‘’B” Term Insurance? Those who have belonged for a shorter duration, receive two months credit as soon as they have paid ten months dues. Why doesn’t our membership waken up and get wise to themselves? It is about time for them to arouse from their lethargy and bring their children into their Verhovay Branches. If you have entered our third gigantic membership c a mpaign, let me give you this tip. Get after the boys and girls in your vicinity and you will soon see how much better you are succeeding than some of the “has-been” contestants w’ho are looking for the parents and grandparents of these young ’’goings-to-be” and “izzers.” Perhaps you have forgotten this story of the man who wanted to buy a horse and said that the real old ones were “has-beens” and the young colts were just “goings-to-be,” while he wanted to buy “izzers.” Begin at once to help build up your Juvenile membership and get a lot of “izzers” and “goings-to-be” into the fold. For every adult new member, you should be able to secure at least two or three children for Verhovay without much more effort on your part. This magnificent membership campaign race has begun. The contestants are nearing the end of the firstlap. During 1938, the names of the 50 winners will be published in our Journal. Why not get busy and steal a march on the other fellow by securing a number of children as new members? After you are Jlead, gone and forgotten, they will be helping to rule our organization.--------o--------DO YOU KNOW? ARE YOU YOUR SON'S PARTNER Believe It Or Not — You cannot deny that you and each of your sons are really and truly partners for life. Perhaps you never had the courage to explain this to any of them. Since the day your son was born, you have put forth extra efforts in your labor or business, because the height of your ambition has been to see him have a share in your success. Many a wise parent has indeed, made every one of his children his actual partner by securing, as soon as possible, for each of them a Juvenile Membership Certificate based upon either the Whole Life, Limited Payment Life or Endowment Insurance Plan. As soon as the child is able to comprehend the real meaning of “Thrift,” “Life Insurance” and “Partnership,” the parent discusses the whole transaction as he takes the child into his confidence and explains as follows: 1. ) You and I together own this particular membership certificate which provides for the creating of an estate-by the investing of small periodical payments to the Association. 2. ) I shall continue to make these small periodical payments for you until you yourself are fully able to do so. 3. ) While the monthly payment of dues is ridiculously small, the amount of the insurance is comparatively quite large. 4. ) The laws of our Association agree with those of our State in stipulating that I shall have control of this certificate until after you have attained the age of sixteen. 5. ) As soon as you are 16 years of age, you obtain full control of your certificate. 6. ) If I had only known at your age a few of the many things I have already learned by most bitter experience, 1 could have avoided many of the snares and pitfalls that I have fallen into. 7. ) Whether we like it or not, we are partners for life, for, after all is said and done, “B loo d is Thicker Than Water.” 8. ) I hope and pray that my children may become much better men and women because they have learned these important 1 e's s o n s while still young, happy and gay. 9. ) 1 want you to know that I am not afraid to trust you implicitly with this membership sertificate. 10. ) I can only request that you will never fail to take me into your confidence and at least consult me before you decide to cease keeping this certificate in full force. 11. ) Always remember that we must remain partners for life. 12. ) Until you assume full responsibility for the payment of these dues I shall keep an accurate record of aril contributions you • may choose to make toward these payments. 13. ) If at any time you find it at all difficult to continue the payment of these dues, there should always be an opportunity for you to earn more than enough to make these payments by receiving commissions or bonuses for the securing of new members for the society. 14. ) If any tricky life insurance agent tries to induce you to drop this certificate to obtain a policy with his company you should remember that these two things are almost sure and certain. 15. ) The shrewd agent knows that if you do this he will be the gainer. 16. ) You most probably will very soon learn that you are eventually the loser. Many more points might be added but for the present let us use a slogan that was much advertised by a well known Pittsburgh furniture firm many years ago. “NUF CED” which you should see is an abbreviation for the words “Enough is Said.” S. HORNER WOOD actuary \ DO YOU KNOW — That medical experts are agreed that the greatest field in medicine today is the prevention of disease. That infected teeth are often the cause of rheumatism. That carrots have a plentiful supply of vitamines and should be served more often. That potatoes should not be served with rice and macaroni because rice and macaroni are starchy foods and take the place of potatoes. That sunshine and fresh air kill germs and thereby help to keep out sickness. That a little pat of butter weighing half an ounce, holds as much food as a pound and a half of watermelon.
