Felvilágosítással és útbaigazítással készséggel szolgálok Verhovay biztosítási és testvérsegitő ügyekben és kész örömmel állok mindazok rendelkezésére is, akik BÁRMELY egyleti ügyben hozzám fordulnak. FIÓK HÍREI A VERHOVAY IFJÚSÁGI SPORTCSAPATOK SZÉP GYŐZELMEI F. é. augusztus 7-én zajlott le az a MAGYAR NAP, amelyet Chicago város charter-jubileumának emlékezetére rendeztek a chicagói magyarok. — A Magyar Nap valóban fényesen sikerült. — Küszöbön áll a szeptember. — A derék magyar Verhovay sportfiuk hirt, dicsőséget akarnak szerezni ismét a Verhovay névnek. VERHOVAY LAPOK SZERKESZTŐSÉGE ♦--------------------------------V GOVERNMENT OLD AGE PENSIONS By—S. A. Oscar, Secretary, National Mutual Benefit WE CAN NOT hope to compete with the government in old age security (1) because there is no choice for the person not in an exempted class (2) the contributor pays only half of the cost. Don’t condemn or criticize the act. Government old age security is here to Stay. It is an honest attempt to meet a problem and don’t forget that it is a prob" lem. If you 'know statistics on old age dependency projected into the future you w ill agree that something must be done. We can say without prejudice, however, that so far as old age security is concerned, the plan for the average man is woefully inadequate. To build a real social security program, the sum available on retirement should be sufficient to provide somewhat near the standard of living to which one is accustomed for the family, as well as the annuitant, and here is where life insurance comes in. Under the act, if you quit working at age 65, you get a pension. It is not a gratuity because both you and your employer have contributed to the fund. Life insurance can augment this old age annuity. A person age 25 starting January 1st this year and working until he reaches age 65 — with an average salary of $100 a month — will have earned $48,000. He will have paid in $1,278 as a tax. If death occurs before 65, the insurance is always 3r/% of the total earnings on which a tax has been paid. If he lives to age 65 and then dies, the death benefit is the same, 3^% or $1,680. If he reaches age 65 and quits work, his pension is $51.25 per month and continues as long as he lives. If he should die approximately two and a half years after starting on his old age payment, there would be no death benefit because the monthly installments which he entered upon at age 65 is deducted from the amount payable as his death benefit, so within three years, he would have no life insurance and there would be no further annuities paid to his family. The plan is an ideal one for the pensioner if he can live a long time after he reaches age 65 or die exactly at the age because then the ins*«*ance is at its peak. If. however, he dies within a few years after going on the pension, there is nothing either in the way of further annuities or insurance for the family-. If this same man had an average salary of $250 a month, at age 65 — if he quit work — he would retire on a payment of $81.25. If lie died at that time his insurance would he $4,200. After he entered on his monthly payments at 65, in approximately four and a half years, his life insurance would be gone because he has received it in monthly installments. If he died at age 71, he would have neither life insurance nor would his family have any further annuities. These cases are not cited at all in criticism of the government plan. I mention them merely to show how necessary it is for the people who come under it to add to it with insurance. I believe it will be a distinct aid in making people annuity or life insurance conscious not only among those covered but the vast number not now included as well. Questions About Government Plan Here are some of the questions that come in our correspondence that we should answer carefully and truthfully : Is the government pension plan compulsory? Yes, unless you are in one of the exempted classes. What does my insurance amount to? It is 3^2 % of your earnings on which you have paid tax. Will my insurance be paid to my beneficiary upon my death? Yes, unless you have passed age 65 and you have drawn enough to dissipate it. You know that every time you draw an annuity, your insurance is reduced by that amount. Will you give me an example of how much insurance I would have at a given age? Very well, you were 30 years of age on January 1, 1941 — four years after you started to pay — you die. In that period you have earned $7,200 and have paid in $81. Your insurance at that time is $252. Just as a means of comparison, this sum expended fór life insurance would have paid for $1.000. Can I do anything with my insurance before age 65? Neither before or after age 65 can you do anything with your insurance. Can I surrender it? No. Can I borrow on it? No. assign it? No. Change it? No. Can I increase my contribution so as to increase my insurance? No, Can I get any benefits from it, should I become disabled? No. Can I do these things with an insurance policy? Yes. Don’t gather from what I have said that I am in any sense criticizing the government social security program. Half of our people now will be compelled to carry it and I imagine other groups will be included. However, old age compensation under any plan provided by the government can never be more than a moderate sum and even those who come under its provisions need life insurance. If we understand the plan and its operation, it should help and not interfere with our business. BRANCH 366 Cleveland, Ohio.
