the graces. The picture in the middle above the entrance is of Apollo and the muses in a group. To the right is an allegorical depiction of the beginnings of painting: a shepherd draws a line around the shadow of a female figure cast on the wall. In the fields between the pictures are the symbols of sculpture and painting. Destroyed during World War II, the middle and right-hand-side pictures were replaced with works of Jenő Medveczky made in 1967 in a style different from that of the originals. The only decorated section of the interior is the foyer. The small allegorical pictures in the eight fields above the string cornice were made by Károly Lotz in 1898. The corner of the foyer nearest Dózsa György út collapsed during in the battles of World War II and the badly damaged fresco was completed by György Ká- kay Szabó in the early 1950s (also in a style differing from that of the original). The paintings of the foyer were restored to their original condition in 1994 by Gábor Nagy who used the studies made for the original decoration.
