Kincsem, the invincible racer rider, too, was given the same simplified, stylised appearance as it stretches out its lower arms thus counterbalancing the horizontal closure of the composition. One of the major sports facilities of Budapest is its Gallop race course, which opened in 1925, in the huge area between Albertirsai út and Kerepesi út (District X). Outside the grandstand, a structure which now itself enjoys special protection as part of the country’s architectural heritage, the statue of the legendary specimen of horse breeding and racing, the racer Kincsem, was ceremonially unveiled on 17 July 1977. There were two formative experiences in the life of Béla Tóth, the statue’s maker - one of horses, the other of sculpture. His father was a famous rider and then trainer, and the boy himself was thus brought up among horses. In addition, Tóth already revealed an exceptional talent 55
