7. MAKING A SPLASH Pools and Baths Budapest has long been famous for its thermal waters and springs and today the city has many pools and baths providing a wide choice, particularly in the sum­mer months (May-September) when the open-air pools are open. These can get very crowded, particularly in high season, but can be near empty in early September when Hungarian children start school. With children a family cabin [családi kabin] is usually the most convenient. It costs a little bit extra but allows you to change and leave all your gear together. The usual system with these, and with locker, is that an attendant locks the door, and gives you a tag. Remember the number of the door for when you return! Swimming caps are sometimes compulsory, sometimes not. Swimming in the Danube is not allowed within the city lipnits.
