5. Swings and Sand-Pits - Playgrounds

SWINGS AND SAND-PITS 37 is another, larger playground with six swings, three slides, climbing frames, sand-pits, table-tennis tables and two parallel bars. Seats are available and there is a pay-toilet. Although not a playground as such, the area in front of the parliament building, by the statue of Lajos Kossuth, is a popular place of relaxation for adults with small children or pushchairs. Lots of seats. Best time for sunshine is the morning. Szabadság tér This is a large square with trees and gardens just to the southeast of parliament (though it’s also a through way for traffic). The American embassy is situated here. The playgrounds are at the south end and are particularly suitable for toddlers. The larger one, to the west, has a wooden castle, airplane and car, sand-pit, small and large slide and some small swings. There are seats all around. Across the road there is a sand-pit, small slide and climbing frame. Köztársaság tér Just off Rákóczi út, not far from the Eastern Railway Station, this is actually the city’s largest square. Given the trees, pathways and benches, however, it’s more like a small park. The east side is given over almost entirely to playgrounds where you can find a variety of swings, table-tennis tables, climbing frames and sand-pits, but surprisingly only one decent slide. Almássy tér This square is hidden away but is only a stone’s throw from Erzsébet körút (north along either Barcsay u. or Wesselényi u.). One of the city’s most active community centres (10) is situated here. The playground has table- tennis tables, two slides, three swings, climbing frames, a small sand-pit and lots of seats and tables. There is a pay-toilet. Almássy u., which leads off from the southern comer of the square, is a short pedestrian way suitable for strolling with pushchairs. It has lots of benches.
