The largest open-air market is at Lehel tér, one stop north on the metro from the Western Rail Station [Nyugati Pályaudvar]. (Open Mon—Sat, and on Sunday morning, too.) Recent times have seen the opening of a number of salad bars [saláta bár] in the city. “Lángos”, a cross between a Yorkshire pudding and a deep-fried pizza base, and sold on the streets near stations, markets and swimming pools, is a traditional favourite with all children. Try it with cheese [sajtos], or sour cream [tejfölös], or both! Health matters Chemists [Gyógyszertár or Patika] are spread throughout the city. Some are open 24 hours including those at 22 Frankel Leó u. (near the Buda end of Margaret Bridge [Margit híd]), 1/b Alkotás u. (near the Southern Rail Station [Déli Pályaudvar]) and 86 Rákóczi út (near the Eastern Rail Station [Keleti Pályaudvar]). Some basic medicines are “Quarelin” for headaches, “Faringosept” for sore throats, “Amidazophenum” for high temperatures, and “Demalgon” for toothache (though a strong Hungarian radish also works well!). Half or quarter the pills for children. Herbs and more natural health products can be obtained in the “Herbária” chain of shops. Large hotels should have a doctor on the premises or on call, smaller hotels should be able to arrange for one. Otherwise it may be necessary to take a sick child to a hospital. The best option is the Pál Heim Hospital, 86 Üllői út (“Nagyvárad tér” metro stop), tel: 133-0718. In an emergency the number for an ambulance is 04 (no coin needed). It should be possible to find an Eng- lish-speaker. Round-the-clock, emergency dental treatment can be obtained at the Dental Clinic at 52 Mária u„ Bp. VIII.
