Detail of the interior of Török Pharmacy existed from the beginning of the period and were frequently visited places of resort; nevertheless, com­pared to such big cities as Vienna, Munich, or London Pest, at an early stage, had to face the problem of the lack of open spaces which could provide fresh air. The other problem was a scarcity of public statues. One of the reasons for this was the tight financial situa­tion, and the other was that our sculptural arts were only at an elementary stage. The role and sometimes high quality of architectural decorative sculptures, represent­ed mainly by the works of József Huber (the former Heinrich House, Wurm House), have been mentioned several times. But neither Clhrl nor Dunaiszky were able to reach a high artistic level in the sculptural arts proper. The situation is not much better regarding religious sculptures. What may belong in this category is either mainly architectural work, such as Mihály Pollack’s al­tars in the Theresatown Church; or woodwork or de­54
