that some responsible authority will be found who can put an end to the further decay of this important cultur­al institution and prime tourist attraction. Walking south from here we cross the largest contin­uous stretch of parkland of Margaret Island, lying on both sides of the walkway with sections landscaped in an English style, copses, thickets and flower beds alternat­ing. Around the middle of the island, stretching east-west, lies a famous rose garden, whose roses in a wide vari­ety of type, shape, colour and scent were once also grown for sale. Pergolas and ponds increase the effect of vari­ety, and among the trees surrounding the garden the curious-looking Manchurian willow (Salix matsudana) and the more than one-and-a-half-century old Celtis trees are worth close inspection. To the south of this lies a large, elliptical flower gar­den stretching out into the distance. There is a colourful carpet of flowers blooming in the beds of this garden all through the year except for the severest times of winter.
