by the Vienna court, Margaret Island languished in a state of neglect for almost two decades under the mismanagement of careless tenants. A new age in its history began in 1866, when the then proprietor Archduke Joseph (Charles Louis) took its maintenance in his own hands and decided to build a bathing centre of international standards. He commissioned geologist Vilmos Zsigmondy, expert researcher of artesian wells, to drill into the subsoil by the north-western bank of the island to locate the hot water springs that had long been observed
