Bodor Ferenc: Coffee-Houses - Our Budapest (Budapest, 1992)
Csöpi Prolonging opening hours until dawn came into fashion in the eighties. You just up and went to have a glass of festive cognac at three in the morning to commemorate November 7th Street cleaners sipped cherry brandy before six, leaning on their brooms. Clj-Lipótváros was suddenly full of places open until dawn. Now only Csöpi on the corner of Sallai Imre utca and Katona József utca is open all night, offering tea, sausages, ice-old Kronenburg and cocktails until the first glimmer of dawn. Those wishing to carouse will be served quality wines instead of washing-up water. The singboard proclaims Breakfasting ä la carte. (It is worthwhile to take note of the hidden purpose behind this subtle grammatical construction. Who breakfasts whom and why? Could it possibly bear some relation to a municipal campaign reception? Banish the thought.) Inside, the boarded ceiling and the metal-legged imitation leather mushroom seats are worthy of note. The green and red neon lettering is also an asset. 14 KATONA JÓZSEF UTCA, XIII. 52
