Bodor Ferenc: Coffee-Houses - Our Budapest (Budapest, 1992)

Alkotás (creation) It is with slight compunction that we walk up to the creative, scaffold-like terrace covered with a soggy green carpet, sweating hands clasped behind our backs. Inside there is warmth, a gleaming counter, funny lamps. Shafts of light cut swathes in the half-darkness. In the corner an intellectual-looking customer is reading a book of essays. He is suitably counterbalanced by the boys poking each other’s eyes out with billiard cues at the back. You must make way through several leyers to learn something about the old time-trees of Budapest. Adrienne Simkó’s piano evokes long- submerged moods. At those times you can barely hear the hum of the MOM (Hungarian Oprical Works) machines grappling with reality. 47 ALKOTÁS CJTCA, XII. 46
