Statüe of Saint Ladislas in Kőbánya Ladislas / Hungary ’s braue king / ennobled his people / with his virtue. / With his braveness / he made the country great / Erected from the gracious gifts of believers / by the Servite Monastery of Remete / in the year of the 90Gb jubilee / of Saint Stephen. Standing to the rear of the Ludovika Academy, towards Orczy Park, Sándor Oláh’s statue of Saint Ladislas was unveiled in 1939, only to be removed in 1945. It was re-erected in a park near the Franciscan church of Sümeg in 1990. Another statue of Saint Ladislas, sculpted by Károly Antal in 1940 in the style of the Rome school, an inter-war trend in modern art, stands in front of the Saint Ladislas parish church of Kőbánya. Made from white marble, the nearly three-metre-tall male figure rests his hands on the handle of a huge battle axe which he holds before him. The composition evokes an aura of majesty, calm, peacefulness and, at the same time, readiness to take up arms. The front of the base bears an inscription of the king’s name and 7
