The small corbel in front of the pedestal was orig­inally decorated by a bronze wreath, but it disap­peared later and was missing for several decades. A new one was placed here in May 2001. Tens of thousands of Poles fought in World War I on both sides. Fighting with the aim of restoring Poland to its earlier state of independent sovereignty, the Polish political and military leadership kept changing tac­tics during the war according to the turns in military fortune and the international political situation. The Polish legion, commanded by Józef Pilsudski, was formed at the beginning of the war and later became the main force of the independent Polish army. When World War I was finally over, Poland had regained its sovereignty, while Hungary had lost two- thirds of its territory.
