(Address: 1025 Budapest, ii, Szépvölgyi út 162. TEL: 188-9537) Discovered in 1930, Szemlő-hegyi Cave is a cave of thermal water origin. Its known length is two kilometres. Opened to the public in 1986, its walls are covered with botryoidal pisolite or “peastone” which looks like bunches of grapes or cauliflowers. This cave is particularly important from our point of view because patients with respiratory illness are treated here. The air inside is saturated with various salts and minerals. Szemlő-hegyi cave is extremely popular and is always full of visitors. It is a “cold” cave, in which patients rest after one hour gymnastic sessions. Treatment lasts three weeks, the sessions three hours a day. The cave can only be visited on medical assignment after a thorough medical check-up on the spot.
