and had a brick factory there. He was on friendly terms with Antal Dreher, and probably he planned the enormous brewery, executed by Mátyás Zitterbarth at a total cost of 640,000 forints. It functioned from 1907 under the name Antal Dreher Brewery Co. At the same time another large brewery was built here, that of Barber and Kluzemann, known from the 1860s as First Hungarian Brewery Share Co. The large Civil Brewery, Kőbánya’s third, was founded in 1894. At the beginning of the century two other breweries were also established, that of Henrik Haggenmacher in Maglódi út, and the Metropolitan Brewery Co. Between the two world wars the breweries tried to survive by means of various mergers. In 1948 all the breweries were nationalized and united under the name of Kőbánya Beer and Malt Enterprise. Travelling by tram along Maglódi út, and looking for the traces of the once separated plants, we can observe the old chimneys only occasionally amidst the forest of the new metal-roofed brewery buildings and slim steel chimneys. Hardly anything known from old photographs can be discovered. The monumental facade of the Metropolitan Brewery is the least changed. The graceful mosaic image in the middle of the facade, depicting King Matthias in profile, has recently been restored. The Kőbánya Brewery can be visited within certain limitations. If we pay a visit, we should take a look at the staff service flats on left side of the main gate, which are modest but important Art Nouveau style buildings. The visit ends at the western gate, a well-arranged group of buildings dating from the 1950s. With the dramatic increase in the number of consumers the city council decided in 1912 to build a power station of its own, in order to provide for the energy needs of the capital.
