Kiss Katalin: Industrial Monuments - Our Budapest (Budapest, 1993)

The plant was built in 1931 and functioned until 1984. Its building, inserted between the public institutes and private houses of the city centre’s official quarter, was occupied by a bank. The change of function presented new problems, which have been successfully solved by the leading architect of the reconstruction. The building, which up to then had been visited only by its staff, was now opened for the public. This change had to be incorporated in the ground plan in the form of an entry hall, lift, garages and inner stairways. A characteristic feature of industrial buildings are the regular windows and inlets. A change of the building’s function requires changing the original windows, but the new ones, which are more suitable for thermal insulation, cleaning and ventilation, usually do not fol­low the original.
