The Sewage Water Plant III, Zsigmond tér Until the middle of the 19th century the sewage waters of Pest, Buda and Óbuda flowed in open ditches into the Danube. In 1869 Bazalgette, London’s chief engineer was commissioned by the mayor of Pest to prepare drainage plans for the city. The Buda drainage system was made by the engineer Ferenc Reitter, who availed himself of the possibilities offered by the natural ditches of the Buda hills, in combination with Bazal- gette’s plans. Budapest’s drainage system is also based on the plants set up at the end of the last century. The Sewage Water Plant in Zsigmond tér was built as part of Buda’s drainage system between 1912 and 1917. It was built to pump sewage and rainwater from Buda and Óbuda into the Danube. Before pumping, Interior view of the Sewage Water Plant in Zsigmond tér 23
