Kino Matthias’ Well (Alajos Stróbl, 1904) problems related to the appropriation of the required land. In January 1891, Ybl passed away. His work was continued, with minor modifications, by Hauszmann, who built the western, “Krisztinaváros” wing and later added a northern wing to the central tract. Hauszmann used paintings and sculpture by contemporary artists for the rich decoration of the interiors. It was around this time that the equestrian statue of Eugene of Savoy by József Róna (1900) and the Matthias Fountain by Alajos Stróbl (1904) were erected outside the main fagade overlooking the Danube and inside the courtyard respectively. In 1983 The Horseherd by György Vas- tagh Jr. (1901) was brought to where it stands to this day from its original site by the ménage. Installed on either side of the Hapsburg Stairs from the central ceremonial hall were once Miklós Ligeti’s dual statues Csongor and Tünde, while inside the palace gardens stood Károly Senyei’s sculpture called Children Fishing (1912). The corner column of the ornamental wrought-iron gate closing the gardens to Szent György tér was topped with Gyula Donáth’s 1903 representation of the Turul, the mythical bird of the ancient Hungarians. 50
