With the opening of the east-west metro line, ferry services lost much of their importance, and by now the aging of the fleet has also become a problem. The annual passenger count has been just over half a million for some time now, with about two thirds of the fares using scheduled ferries and the rest travelling on board local boats or special crossing services. The World Exposition scheduled for 1996 can be ex- ipected to boost ferry traffic, as the Expo’s events will be held on the two sides of the Danube, in Lágymányos and in Ferencváros. The burden on land transportation could be reduced by starting special boat services from various locations in the city, as was done by MFTR in the summer of 1926, when it established direct water communication to the National Boy Scout Camp in Káposztásmegyer from Eskü (today Március 15) tér. 46
